On Friday morning, authorities said the situation in the Puna subdivision continues to get more dire.
And Hawaii County Civil Defense authorities have issued this ominous warning to households that choose not to heed mandatory orders to leave: “First responders may not be able to come to the aid of residents who refuse to evacuate.”
The five eruptions, the latest of which started just five minutes after the large quake, are threatening several homes — and authorities have confirmed that at least two homes have sustained significant damage.
Dramatic images from the subdivision show lava bubbling up from the ground and soaring more than 100 feet in the air. Residents described the sound of the eruptions as haunting — “hissing” and “like a freight train.”
So far, oofficials have confirmed breakouts on Mohala Street, Kaupili Street, Makamae Street and near Kahukai Street and Leilani Avenue.
All the islands of Hawaii are formed from volcanoes. As a result there are going to me miles of old volcanic vents and tunnels underneath the surface. A good quake could collapse many of these old tunnels. Could even open up a new active vent.

The 13 or so earthquakes have opened cracks and that is where the molten lava is shooting up; some over 100 feet high. This is the Puna district, South and East of Hilo. We who live in Puna call ourselves Punatics and our motto is “some of us are here because we are not all there.” Puna is in the southernmost part of the southernmost island in the southernmost state in the union. We is Suthuners. So far only 2 homes have been burned down, and some 1,700 people have been evacuated. The biggest tremor was 6.9.
