Fewer people are visiting Las Vegas. One insider thinks hotel resort and parking fees are to blame

Daily resort fees and parking charges are rising and spreading in Las Vegas, adding as much as $45 a day to visitors' hotel bills. The publisher of Las Vegas Advisor blames the extra charges for a recent decline in the number of visitors.

"Everyone hates resort fees, but the parking [fee] is even worse," said Anthony Curtis of Las Vegas Advisor. "Everyone wants some kind of comp, [and] the most basic comp is free parking. That was the one comp that everyone got."

The Advisor, a decades-old, monthly newsletter highlighting what's new in Vegas and featuring deals for visitors, provides lists of parking costs and resort fees across southern Nevada.

Even self parking costs now. In the past, valet was "free". If you wanted quick pick up, you tipped well when you dropped the car. I've even got "up front" parking for as little as $5.oo. Now valet parking is not free at most casinos unless you are a certain level or above in their players club system. Not a fan of this. So, we stick closer to home.

The nice thing about fees (to them) is that the sucker probably finds out about them when its too late.

If people stop going to those hotels they will eventually change

Resort vacations are no longer fun. The expense has taken the fun out of it. Vegas, Disney, theme parks, any tourist spot now has more hand in my pockets than my shorts can bear.

Resort fees typically cover in-room Wi-Fi and local phone calls as well as access to fitness centers and swimming pools. Of course, the fee is charged whether or not you use the amenities.

I assume there's a tax reason that this sort of overhead is booked as a separate fee rather than rolled into the room charges. Why not a "fee" for electricity and water, too?

I would wager that the average cost to stay 3-4 days in Vegas is still far far cheaper than the same stay in a Disney theme park.

The strip is not at all walkable
I love the weather
Any decent restaurant is crazy expensive, as are all non-gambling activities
I was surprised how often I smelled weed.
I want to see the Vegas Knights win the Stanley Cup

Been a few years but when you have to hold your nose from the stench and fend off the hawkers it is no fun.

Resort fees to me are a form of fraud and false advertising.

If my room costs $100 but I am REQUIRED to pay a $25 ‘resort fee’ to reserve the room then my actual reservation costs me $125.

By shuffling costs into the resort fee category the hotels are then advertising a lower and UNTRUE room rate.

The practice is fraudulent and should be put to an end ASAP.

But for now my family refuses to stay anywhere that has a resort fee.

Yeah, because it couldn't POSSIBLY be due to the biggest mass shooting in U.S. history, still basically unsolved.

Just because the media has tried to memory-hole the massacre, doesn't mean people have forgotten.

I always enjoyed Vegas when I went back in the 90s.

Went a few years ago, hated every minute of it, and I vowed never to go back.

I watched how much work my daughter put into her Disney vacation for *months* leading up to it. I'm amazed she had any fun at all.

Actually, I know she did -- I can't imagine how someone who didn't put all that work into it has any fun.

One insider thinks hotel resort and parking fees are to blame....

Or it could be no one is interested in getting gunned down in a mass shooting only to have the authorities cover up, hide the facts and put out some BS story line.

Nah, its probably the parking fees....

You sayin’ we’re riffraff? LOL! I been called worse.

The crowd that drags in coolers to Vegas, hits the buffet instead of the tables.

They can use less of those...

The resort fees keep going up and up. Some casinos charge $43. Then they charge an early check in fee. Then exzorbanant ATM fees after they take your money.

I agree. Walking on the strip was impossible, and almost everything not inside the most expensive casinos and hotels was cheap and filthy dirty.

I was in Vegas in 2004, and again last year. In 2004, it was sleazy, but nowhere near as bad as it is now. Filthy lowlifes everywhere, and young prostitutes on every corner, many of whom certainly didn't look old enough to be driving, much less selling themselves on the streets of that disgusting town.

I really don't get the allure of Vegas, but then I am not really a gambler or a customer of prostitutes, so maybe that's it.
