America and the EMP threat
americanthinker.com ^ | 5/3/2018 | Daniel Ashman

A congressional committee report states that a large electromagnetic pulse (EMP) inundating America could cause 90% of Americans to die. The EMP is inevitable. The dead Americans are not.

Pry explained that an EMP can happen in a few different ways: if an adversary attacks America using nuclear weapons, or naturally via a large solar storm. The reason why a large EMP hitting Earth is inevitable is that solar storms are inevitable. They happen regularly. The only question is when a large one will cross Earth's path. For instance, NASA reported that if a solar superstorm from 2012 had happened just one week earlier, it would have blasted the Earth with a catastrophic EMP. We are playing this slot machine every day. Eventually, we're going to hit the jackpot.

We’re going to have our 200+ house rewired this summer (it has all knob and tube wiring running through it). Is there something the electricians should do to prevent such a situation? I’m a “better safe than sorry” gal!

The “Carrington Event”... In 1859 the wires were exposed copper (no insulating sheath), and they more than likely didn’t have anything grounded.

The power grid back in 1962 is not the same as today. Today there are multiple layers of redundancy in switches, surge protection, enhanced grounding, capacitors, solid state controls, etc, etc.

Carrington event was a CME producing charged particles which is a vastly different form of EMP than say a gamma ray burst. Unfortunately, both are types of EMP and public conflation of the two is rampant.

Yes, a CME is a low frequency event and as you point out it might fry cheap surge protectors (or might not). It will probably fry transformers and take down parts of the grid.

EMP can do that too. But EMP is more likely to be high frequency, and with enough energy it will fry small electronics. Designing the weapon to create enough energy is nontrivial.

Yes, we are, well, except those alive Christians the day of the Rapture. But if local authorities linked up with federal monies, the necessary recovery equipment could be stockpiled. Why wouldn’t the most advanced civilization of planet Earth make such plans knowing the event is inevitable? Well, it has to do with the leftist methodology, to bring down to a common level so there are no signs of excellence. They, the leftists, liberals and dead soul democrats are the enemy of America and civilization advancing.

WI National guard is drilling for “Dark Skies” in WI next week.

http://dma.wi.gov/DMA/news/2018news/18033

I’ve seen that they plan to go doo to door with “welfare checks” in Omro, WI.

I’m from the government, and I’m here to help. Could you please show me where your food and guns are located?

Your comment is too long and conflates high and low frequencies. There are very few natural high frequency sources, all of which would come from outside the solar system. The likelihood is close to zero. The low frequency events, whether manmade or solar, are only going to affect long lines and mainly transformers. The manmade high frequency sources are difficult to create, and unlikely to be done effectively.

So, in addition to the house wiring, other factors could exacerbate the situation you described. Multiple ground taps on different points on cold water pipes... etc.

Agreed.

CottonBall :" Thank you for the ping. 90%, that’s amazing.
It’ll be tough going for those that are left."

90 %, rite
That 90% includes the folks who just gave up, because they were unprepared to live without electricity, internet,
refrigeration, TV, and all the other electronic amenities that we are currently used to having.
That is why it is so important to practice your preps, and learn to do without, or improvise, adapt, and overcome.
I know people who put up 'wheat berries', but don't know how to grow replacements, winnow, grind, or use them.
How many of us know how to garden to produce our own food supply, know of animal husbandry, meat preservation and butchery,
beekeeping, farming, mechanic repairs, repair our own houses, plumbing, wiring, etc., etc. ??
Many survival medications need to be refrigerated; do you know what is a 'spring house' ?.. or how to find a spring without a 'water witch' ?
Even my son, who has laying hens (but no rooster) appreciates the eggs,
but doesn't know how to make lay mash without the Ag supply store, or know of chicken nutrition or photosensitivity.

The most basic survival is : how to locate and purify fresh water ?
Without water, the average person exists for 3 days; and the average person needs a gallon per day.
No electricity equals no pumps for fuel or water; your water is only as clean as what is upstream.
If upstream is urban ... Good bye !

What those worried about EMP are concerned about is the E1 pulse, which takes place in literally nanoseconds, far faster than surge protectors can react.

You have misunderstood Justa's comment. You are talking about high frequency pulses which everyone agrees are not going to be stopped by surge protectors. Justa was talking about the low frequency EMP and CME events that are much more likely. First, because low frequency EMP is much easier than high frequency. Second, because low frequencies are the only plausible natural event. Justa is exactly correct that surge protectors are more than adequate for those most likely events.

Dude there are tens of thousands if not millions of “EMP” strikes every day.... It’s called lightning.

That is equivalent to E2. That is not E1 and E3.

That is a lot for one person to learn. Not to mention self-defense. Self-defense would be a lot easier in a community as well. But then you have to wonder if you can truly trust all of your community members.

It’s enough to make you paranoid. And crazy. I have to just rely on God and faith, as well as prepping :-)

I would like to add something about modern house wiring. I have stated this before. There is a large antenna in the walls of most modern homes. A Carrington like event will ruin many peoples day.

That's completely incorrect. The induced voltage would be about 0.2 Volts (20 Volts per km).

You need do nothing. The Carrington event generated about 20 volts per km of wiring. That means in your house it would generate about 0.2 V which is less fluctuation than the grid produces normally. So there is nothing to do for natural solar flares, or even most manmade nuclear EMP.

I’m aware of how utilities and the fees that they charge for service are regulated.

Which is to say, that until and unless they are granted a rate increase, or even a temporary surcharge, to cover the cost of preparing for an EMP, they aren’t going to spend the money - there’s nothing in it for them from the standpoint of cold, hard numbers. This is most definitely a government problem - they need to require spare transformers and certain minimum levels of protection against ALL kinds of surges, natural and man-made.

Thanks for the information - its best to be prepared for an electrical fire starting within one’s walls, than to be completely surprised by it.

20 volts per km from the 1921 event: http://pages.erau.edu/~reynodb2/ep410/OdenwaldGreen_Superstorm.pdf The Carrington event was higher but not that much higher. A household wiring length or even a neighborhood grid would still only develop trivial voltages.

A more ominous threat is a minor player in terrorism sneaking a nuclear device into Yellowstone and detonating it where the effect awakens that super volcano. A shipping container is large enough to accomplish the delivery and we have tens of thousands of semis criss crossing the nation regularly.
