Bharara: Rosenstein's 'dramatic and defiant' response to a threat of impeachment was 'long overdue'

Former US attorney Preet Bharara applauded Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein for his response to reports that some members of the House Freedom Caucus were moving to seek his impeachment as a last resort to hamstring the Russia investigation.

Rosenstein slapped down that threat on Tuesday during a discussion with reporters, saying "The Department of Justice is not going to be extorted."

The deputy attorney general oversees the Russia probe being led by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Preet Bharara, a former US attorney and an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, applauded Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's response to news that members of the House Freedom Caucus might seek to impeach him as a last resort.

Rosenstein slapped down that threat in front of reporters on Tuesday, saying "The Department of Justice is not going to be extorted."

Rosenstein oversees the special counsel Robert Mueller, who is conducting the Russia investigation and an inquiry into whether Trump obstructed justice during the probe while in office.

Bharara called Rosenstein's reaction "dramatic and defiant," and said that was precisely how Rosenstein needed to respond.

Here's Bharara: "To be clear: this is the most dramatic and defiant thing anyone at the top of DOJ has said about the ongoing nonsense," Bharara said, apparently referring to efforts by Trump's Republican allies in Congress to hamstring the Russia probe.

He said Rosenstein's clap-back was "long overdue."

He is the Attorney General. There is someone else named to that post, but his vital signs are nonexistent and he spends his days in a seniors group room.

Actually, Rodney Rosenstein has no authority to defy legitimate Congressional oversight.

Congresses attempts at oversight are not unreasonable given the misconduct and conflicts of interest we already know for a fact exist at DOJ and FBI

Congress is trying to get to bottom of what looks like serious crimes and public corruption committed by high level DOJ and FBI officials and Rosenstein is implicated in the misconduct to the point that he at least is a witness, if not target, of an potential criminal investigation so he should be recusing himself as is his ethical duty .

There is only legitimate, lawful reason for Rosenstein to be uncooperative and that is if he has been instructed to do by President Trump.

Sounds like RosenWeasel is trying to obstruct the Constitutional Justice he so richly deserves.

Hence Trump's response. If the President tells DoJ to turn over the documents then DoJ must obey, as Trump is their boss. Also, Andrew McCarthy being interviewed by Andrew Wilkow said this should actually be the route to take.

The Deep State aka the Praetorian Guard is declaring that the peoples branch of the government no longer has any oversight on their activities. Congress either follows through on their threats or the Deep State from here own out runs the country and voting is useless, you have no say.

That’s a very good summary of where we are.

Wash DC has indeed taken on a life of its own completely independent of the people. The rise of the Fourth Branch (administrative state) set this in motion. All the various departments and agencies feel zero connection to the people (and thumb their noses at any notion of the people controlling them) and are in it only for themselves now. Voting is indeed useless - you are voting for the Uniparty whose only mission is ignoring the electorate.

This stunt came across as the height of arrogance and invulnerability.
What an ass.

The way the swamp thinks, politicians come and go, but bureaucrats stay on forever. For Congress to threaten that is a threat they cannot abide.
