Alcohol in Scotland just became more expensive as the country today introduced a minimum price per unit of alcohol.

It is the first country in the world to implement such a law, with the Scottish government believing its introduction will save lives. The new legislation sets a 50 pence (approximately 70 cents) minimum price per unit of alcohol. Anyone licensed to serve alcohol in the country -- in shops as well as bars and restaurants -- will need to follow the new pricing laws.

Liberals never learn. Government price controls never work.

10 milliliters of pure alcohol is one unit.

750ml bottle of 80 proof/40% hooch = 300ml of pure alcohol or 30 units.

Certain jurisdictions in Canada (BC and Ontario) have government run liquor boards that essentially do what Scotland does.

For example, wine imported from France that was imported at $1.00 a bottle - the store owner cannot sell it at $10 as he wished but MUST price it at $19.

Yeah, I bet they don’t have a lot of corn there. :)

But they have a lot of potatoes, and thus vodka.

Hard to see how this could be a tax, since in the UK excise duty on alcohol is paid by quantity, not price (so same duty on a pint of beer whatever the price). So if this minimum price did have the effect of lowering consumption, it would actually reduce not increase income to the government.
