NEW YORK T-Mobile and Sprint have struck a deal that could reshape the U.S. wireless landscape, bringing it down to three major cellphone companies.
T-Mobile on Sunday closed a $26.5 billion agreement that merges the phone company with Sprint, upping Sprints market value to $6.62 per share, CNBC reported.

At one point I used both and got away from each because of service issues in my area. I lived in a Dead Zone and had trouble connecting to service. Finally switched to Cricket and it works for me.
My feelings on this merger are it will end badly. Sprint years ago bought Nextel and it was not compatible with Sprint's CDMA system and failed.
Sprint still uses CDMA and I think T-Mobile uses GSM so they are not compatible either. So now you have a company that is up to it's neck in debt and still needs to make Capital Expenditures to stay relevant.
I think in the near future the choices for Cell Carriers will drop again and maybe we end up with two. Guess we will see.
Comments anyone????
Kill it!
Yep. We will all pay more.
CDMA is being phased out, and all carriers are moving to a common LTE modulation scheme. Good for subscribers, because now Verizon, Sprint, and US Cellular can roam to AT&T and T-Mobile and vice-versa instead of only within their CDMA/GSM worlds. More roaming partners mean lower costs.
On the flip side a Sprint/T-Mo merger gets rid of one major player, and one that competed on the low cost side (and low network quality). So T-Mo wouldn't have to compete as hard on being the low cost leader.
Interesting stuff. I bet the merger goes through this time.
Interesting. Sprint should have phased out CDMA a long time ago.
I think one of the more interesting aspects of this is that the new T-Mobile has an extended vision that AT&T already has been exploiting, that they're no longer just a cell company, but an internet service provider. That's been a vision they should have had for a while, but 4g wasn't deployed in such a manner to capitalize on it. 5g allows them to target all aspects of the media market.
I think with that vision, this is a great merger. AT&T (DirectTV/UVerse) & Verizon (Spectrum Fios) would have buried them had they not merged. It'll be interesting to see Comcast’s reaction to all of this, as I'm sure they were eyeing one or both to digest in short order.
Not an issue since most modern phones have a SIM slot and can use any kind of network. Cricket mainly uses Sprint for their network, but not everywhere so your local Cricket tower might be on some other network.
You beat me to it.
Sprint brings nothing to the table.
Sprint SERVICE is HORRIBLE!
Sprint keeps using it line of BS: - Oh, we’re going to be making a major investment, .....yati , Yaty, YATE!
I’ll go back to a Land Line before I ever use Sprint.
Sprint is Garbage!
Cricket, from all I have read, uses ATT to piggy back on. Sprint has Boost Mobile as it’s low cost carrier.
Agreed.
I recently dumped their prepaid network (Virgin Mobile) and switched to T-Mobile's prepaid, but Sprint has chased me down.
For customers, it looks like a win-win; the low ball market has Obama Phones (which I guess should be called Trump phones now...?), followed by Boost, Cricket, Metro PCS, etc. Out of the big cell carriers, you have Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile; Sprint has been trying to cannibalize it's own low cost market, T-Mobile has positioned themselves as the mid tier option, expanding Metro PCS’ footprint as well as growing their POS stores.
As the announcement indicates, T-Mobile’s new business will rely upon 5g and stretch beyond the portable cell phone and into the home, especially in rural areas. Ultimately, T-Mobile aims to leverage the phone base into becoming one of the biggest pipes into the home, be it a ranch or an apartment. Effectively, their goal is to leapfrog Comcast.
I think they'll get it done to the benefit of customers of both companies.
Just as long as that doesn’t mean I’ll get Sprint’s horrid service as a T-Mobile customer!
These guys were the only competition at the good but cheap level. A merger should allow them to float their prices higher, though still below Verizon or AT&T.
That could be. I currently have both Cricket and Sprint (diff phones), and used to also have an AT&T phone, and I thought the Cricket and Sprint overlapped. But I could be wrong.
How many thousands of jobs will be lost?
I don’t like Sprint, either. Cricket went with attached which means their policies changed and rates began to fluctuate, they became harder to work with. Been with MetroPCS and for the most part, am satisfied. Honestly, the best service I’ve ever used was Walmarts. That’s probably because they used Verizon lines so no matter where I went Nationwide, I had coverage. The second best has been metro. If they become iffy, I will return to Walmart.
Verizon still uses cdma and whitelisting as their transition to 4g lte continues...but with Verizon there is coverage
I use att only because i travel a lot into an area where they are the only reliable coverage...t mobile was great within 5 miles of downtown but thats it
Even with a sim slot you cant the two are not compatible...some phones do have two radios (gsm and cdma) for international use but good luck connecting your gsm phone to a verizon/sprint network with a simple sim switch
then it'll prolly be the first time in history a merger created new jobs, positions are usually eliminated
