CDMA is being phased out, and all carriers are moving to a common LTE modulation scheme. Good for subscribers, because now Verizon, Sprint, and US Cellular can roam to AT&T and T-Mobile and vice-versa instead of only within their CDMA/GSM worlds. More roaming partners mean lower costs.
On the flip side a Sprint/T-Mo merger gets rid of one major player, and one that competed on the low cost side (and low network quality). So T-Mo wouldn't have to compete as hard on being the low cost leader.
