It's A Former NFL Player Vs. A Donald Trump Acolyte In A Battle For The Soul Of The Republican Party

But by the standards of the Trump era — where style and identity overshadow ideology and policy, and where the lengths you go to to present yourself as a Trump loyalist often matter more than your voting record — there are sharp differences between Anthony Gonzalez and Christina Hagan.

Gonzalez, 33, was a star wide receiver at Ohio State and a first-round draft pick in the NFL, where he caught passes from Peyton Manning. He later earned an MBA from Stanford and worked as a top executive with an education technology company in Silicon Valley.

His first television ad? Packed with reminders of his football career. A recent fundraiser? Headlined by Jim Tressel, the former Buckeyes head coach who remains beloved and influential in the state. Gonzalez is counting on this hometown hero image to carry him against his more-seasoned opponent and to make up for his dry and cerebral personality on the campaign trail. (“I was told once never to give process answers,” he confessed to an audience recently, before launching into a process answer to a question about the national debt.)

Hagan, 29, has been a state lawmaker since her senior year at Malone, a tiny Christian university just outside the district. She holds her father’s old seat, was married in a statehouse ceremony, and has fast become a career politician despite positioning herself as an outsider in Trump’s mold. She emphasizes her family’s small plumbing and heating business and serves up other homespun anecdotes — peeling potatoes in the back of a local diner, waiting tables even after winning a seat in the legislature — as proof of her working-class cred.

Gonzalez's hero is Ben Sasse, the Senator from Never Trump. Will Gonzalez crash and burn in the primary? Anyone from the region care to lay odds?

Article is too long. We don’t need a Sasse in the house.

I personally know Gonzalez from Stanford. He’s a Stanford alum from a rival frat. And he’s a lying asshole. If the original FAKE NEWS of Buttfeed has this clown as their hero for the GOP, you know something’s wrong.

Let’s just say he’s the 2nd coming of Jeff Flake..

Now come on, when has “lying asshole” ever been any sort of disqualification for a RINO never-Trumper?

He is also a carpetbagger who recently moved from California to Ohio just so he could get into Congress.

Affirmative action or athletic admit? The thing I like about Cruz is that he is very clearly sharp as a tack in one-on-one interviews, and Dershowitz said very complimentary things about him, meaning he could have gotten in even without AA.

It would appear that this guy has no real plan-B career laid out....he has to become a political figure. Twenty years ago, he might have had a chance. People are so fed up with fake GOP players, that it’ll be hard to convince people of your intent.

Are we talking Stanford or Stamford? Not there is much of a difference.

33 years of age. He should still be playing if he was any good. Reminds me of Heath Schuler, QB. Should have been in the prime of his career with the position he plays. A failure.

If find that statement insulting. That statement means the writer(and poster?) is clueless as to what is happening in the country now. It isn't about Trump; it is about stopping globalism, the deep state and its destructive nature.

Why post this garbage?

To all:

I also am not impressed with Malone, someone who thinks that “seat” is a family business. She’s not entitled to that seat anymore then I am. She needs to out and live a life! Do something besides politics, get some life experiences! (As far ad I am concerned professional politicians and professional politician wannabes come up to the plate to win my vote with an automatic two strikes!) It’s sad that, that district has no other choices. Given its just those two I guess I would go with Malone, at least she has long term ties there.

Heath Schuler, QB.

The realities of professional sports is a very large step from collegiate level play. Draftees washing out one and four years into the game is not uncommon. That washout rate is probably the norm. Draftees riding the pine for a season and then scrubbed is also common.

Huh? Before he ran for office I didn’t care for Trump. I voted for him because of his ideology and his policies.

There are 129 NCAA football teams and only 32 NFL teams. By definition, the lesser lights in the NCAA teams will wash out. The problem with Gonzalez isn’t that he wasn’t very good in the NFL. 99.9999% of the population aren’t good enough to play for an NCAA team, so where football is concerned, Gonzalez is somewhere in the stratosphere. The issue with Gonzalez as a GOP pol is that he’s not very conservative - he’s Marco Rubio with better academic credentials. Latin America is full of these kinds of corrupt pols. We don’t need one representing any GOP district in Ohio. Let him run as a Democrat.

This is passive-aggressive posturing by yet another affirmative action hire trying for a higher-paying affirmative action slot at a more prestigious media outlet than Buzzfeed. Non quota hires tend to be a little more subtle.

You and millions of voters were against Trump’s style and his personality. But we gambled that he would actually do some good things. We are pleasantly surprised that his actions exceed his promises... quite the opposite from Bush I and II.
