Amazon handling our national security: Worse than you think

The U.S. Department of Defense has more than 3,000 datacenters and countless applications. The DOD smartly want to consolidate to save money. In March, the DOD put out a request for a proposal about a compute cloud infrastructure. Business Insider reports that Amazon is currently a shoe-in for the $10-billion contract. One reason is because Amazon has already signed a $600M contract with the CIA to run a more secure datacenter in Washington, D.C.

Bryan Crabtree wrote an article talking about why it is a mistake for the U.S. military to choose Amazon. Many don't realize there is already a free solution to this problem, called OpenStack.

One of the benefits of the free software movement is that you can download the code and run it on your own computer. You can leverage the advancements of industry and academia inside your datacenter.

There are great free codebases for managing a private cloud, such as OpenStack. It is a system written in Python that NASA also uses and has contributed to.

With OpenStack, the U.S. military could cheaply and quickly consolidate its existing computing datacenters into a more reasonable number. Presumably, some of the remaining datacenters will be under mountains.

Under mountains of what? I hear amazon now has the capability to deliver packages to the trunks of certain vehicles. Awesome huh? What could possibly go wrong?

Just what a friend of mine says who works in Washington. He said it would blow your mind, half of them come across as having no more than a 6th grade education and the other half are nuts. Look at James Comey, the guy is a lunatic. It’s like he wants to go to jail and HE was running the FBI?

Under existing U.S. law, Amazon, and many others, should be broken up. But the law doesn’t really matter theses days.

Im no fan of Nezos politics but he’s far from stupid and has surrounded himself with a culture of success as the only alternative...never thought i’d see conservarives so upset at success

Also, openstack may be the way to go soon but right now its not proven to be mansheable like aws is

Yep and copyright law it seems. Somehow a multi-billion dollar corporation like Google is somehow able to get away with offering just about every record ever recorded in the past 100 years for free on Youtube for anybody to stream or download. Why buy a Frank Sinatra record or a Pink Floyd record or any record today when you can get it absolutely free on Youtube. In other words copyright royalties go out the window into the pocket of Google in ad revenue. How that company is not sued and fined into bankruptcy is beyond me, but I’ll bet it has a lot to do with the amount of pockets they line in Washington.

It’s because the government is infested with crooks and we have a justice dept that does nothing about it, and we have this guy Bezos wih virtually unlimited money infiltrating it and I would imagine controlling decisions in Congress telling them to oppose Trump on anything and everything.

I’m not talking about Bezos. I’m talking about the people in the Army and politicians who keep giving control and access of our government IT infrastructure to people who want to expose our government IT infrastructure.

Amazon is already better at all aspects of information security than any government agency.

Except the uniformed military.

Secure datacenters. It’s what they do.

It underlies every aspect of their business model.

Every new major successful business ultimately results in some jobs being lost. The automobile put thousands of blacksmiths out of business. The personal computer put thousands of secretaries out of business. It’s called progress.

“The people making these decisions are complete morons.”

I would trust Amazon to get it right before I would trust any government agency, other than DCA.

And DCA does it with air gaps and superior encryption. And very, very strident physical access control.

I am currently employed in the IT industry and have a long history with DOD communications. I’ve seen both sides.

If Amazon is getting into government secrets, then you can be sure that Amazon is not to blame. We do, indeed, have lunatics running the asylum. It is like destructive requirements have been placed of selecting leadership in our Nation.

Amazon likely has a vastly better IT setup than anything in DOD.

Maybe DOD can get Amazon to redo DTS for us....?

Mariner, I have seen you posting for years. From what you just said, you understand. Exactly. Though not in “IT”, I am in programming at NASA.

It is my opinion that most US government communications, including email, texts, instant messaging, video conferencing, have it’s own physical network, completely separated from the current internet.

Yes, I know that would be insanely expensive. However, if a nation/government cannot secure it’s communications and data, it will be taken down. There IS a war going on, and for the most part we are using 50 year old strategies to fight this war.

Given how well Amazon executed on all aspects of its business, maybe we could use a little more sweatshop labor. The government pays 10 times as much, and can’t seem to get anything done
