You keep the control panel for the alarm in your bedroom. You am the alarm just before you go to bed, and disarm it when you get up. You also lock pets up at night so they won't set off the motion detector. A bit tedious, but much better than waking up to find an intruder in your bedroom.

I recently had an alarm repair guy come out to replace the emergency battery. He told me they have motion detectors now that account for pets up to about 80 lbs. I think I am going to switch out our old motion detector which would be set off by a mouse. It would be nice to be able to use it at night.
Ours is an old school alarm system with all the contact points on windows and doors, etc.
