The Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation on Thursday to protect special counsel Robert Mueller.
In a 14-7 vote, the panel approved the bipartisan proposal that deeply divided Republicans on the committee.
With every committee Democrat backing the legislation, only one Republican was needed to secure passage.
In the end, 4 Republicans voted for the measure.
The vote marks the first time Congress has advanced legislation to formally protect Mueller from being fired as Trump has publicly railed against him, and reportedly privately talked of firing him.
The bill, sponsored by Sens. Chris Coons (D-Del.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.), would codify Department of Justice regulations that say only a senior Department of Justice official can fire Mueller or another special counsel.
It would give a special counsel an "expedited review" of their firing. If a court determines that it wasn't for "good cause" they would be reinstated.
The committee also added new reporting requirements into the bill, including notification when a special counsel is appointed or removed and requiring a report be given to Congress after an investigation wraps up that details its findings and decisions to prosecute.

It passed a Senate Committee. McConnell has all ready said their will never be a voted on on the Senate Floor. Usless media posturing by the Senators involved. Voters should call their office and tell them to quit wasting time with these idiotic media stunts
And Trump vetoes this if it actually makes it to his desk.
A nothingburger.
It's a farce.
It's the Dems saying....again....if we don't do this...we're absolutely sure that the President will fire Mueller. We are saving the nation!!
What a lot of cr**.
Like the President said a few days ago...they've been saying that for 6 months...maybe more...and Mueller is still there.
No....Mitch has already said he wouldn’t even bring it to the floor.
If the Plague wiped out the US Senate today, would we notice a difference? I think not.
You are wrong. If the entire U.S. Senate were wiped out today, the country would be immediately better off...literally by magnitudes of order. We would be eliminating the most corrupt institution in the history of the country. The nation would immediately and dramatically improve.
He channels McCain....again!!
Beside Tillis and Linda Graham, who were the other two Republicans?
Scumbag Republicans.
I think I hate “our” party almost as much as I hate the Democrats.
Voters should contact their Senators and tell them to stop with the empty posturing for the Media and start doing their JOBS for a change.

We can start with “hero” John McCain - who hasn’t even bothered to show up for work since last year.
“If the entire U.S. Senate were wiped out today, the country would be immediately better off...literally by magnitudes of order. “
Of course, you are right! My bad! When I see House members on TV, there are a few of them that are patriots (mostly the one’s in the Freedom Caucus). But there isn’t ONE EFFING SENATOR that I would vote to save from the Plague.
The bill will never see the Senate floor. McConnell has said so. I doubt that most Reps would want to have a recorded vote on the issue, especially those up for reelection in 2018.
This bunch makes Russian KGB look like choir boys.
Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
We were warned.
Isn’t there more that can be done to reign in these RINOs?
Such BS.
Does it include a constitutional amendment?
Trump will need to veto. IIRC, Bush2 did not veto McCain’s Campaign Finance bill since it seemed to be so unconstitutional. Duh, Supremes upheld it.
Trump is nobody’s fool. Firing Mueller would invite trouble for him. He probably arranged for Louie Gohmert to write that 50-page expose on Muehler, and that’s really the smart approach.
Slick Willy did the same sort of thing to Ken Starr, attacking him in the media and letting him carry on his investigation uninterrupted and unhindered.
Slick Willy was guilty as hell, got impeached but not convicted, and had a high approval rating regardless.
Trump is innocent of this ridiculous, Gilbert-ian conspiracy, is not about to get impeached unless the Dems literally sweep the House, which is getting less likely by the day, and has a high approval rating, fueled by a good economy and unfair treatment in the media.
His handling of this is better than Slick Willy’s handling of Monica-gate, because he has friendly Congressmen doing the main attacking in whatever friendly media he can find. Slick Willy didn’t have to work so hard. The MSM was in his back pocket.
Yet Linda “supports” Trump 2020.
Flake & Grassley
Did the Dems do this for Ken Starr? Asking for a friend.
patently unconstitutional ...
