The 86-year-old social scientist says accepting the impending end of most life on Earth might be the very thing needed to help us prolong it.
Were doomed, says Mayer Hillman with such a beaming smile that it takes a moment for the words to sink in. The outcome is death, and its the end of most life on the planet because were so dependent on the burning of fossil fuels. There are no means of reversing the process which is melting the polar ice caps. And very few appear to be prepared to say so.
Hillman, an 86-year-old social scientist and senior fellow emeritus of the Policy Studies Institute, does say so. His bleak forecast of the consequence of runaway climate change, he says without fanfare, is his last will and testament.
Can civilisation prolong its life until the end of this century? It depends on what we are prepared to do. He fears it will be a long time before we take proportionate action to stop climatic calamity. Standing in the way is capitalism. Can you imagine the global airline industry being dismantled when hundreds of new runways are being built right now all over the world? Its almost as if were deliberately attempting to defy nature. Were doing the reverse of what we should be doing, with everybodys silent acquiescence, and nobodys batting an eyelid.

I always turn to a “social scientist” when I want facts about the climate.
Bye, you fetid commie.
Why do we even recognize this people! They are week minded idiots that are close to death and wish the world ends with them.
99.9% of the earths weather and climate is controlled by one thing and one thing only.
THE SUN!!!!!!!! If there was no sun we would be a ice ball! The stupidity of this planet is extraordinary.
Wake me up when a large group of highly educated and respected climatologists who are not on the receiving end of government or other biased funding, and who are armed with rims of actual facts
****************
I just don’t believe that anyone has sufficient knowledge about the complexities of the earth’s core, the geophysical influences that act on our plant, solar activity, the circulation of the world’s oceans, the lunar pull, the earth’s graviatational forces, and myriad other factors to accurately model weather on earth. Our understanding is far from complete, as some would have us believe.
One thing we can understand however is that the empassioned advocates of climate change all seem to be personally benefitting in some way by pushing their alarmist theories.
Pointy headed useless idiot at a point headed useless "institute" bloviating about things he knows nothing about.
Mayer you are a social scientist who does not really understand the physical sciences, so butt out!!
We physical scientists have far more knowledge than you and we call this global warming theory nonsense!
As I sit here April 26th, watching the ice go out, later than usual, color me skeptical.
All this “warming” hasn’t changed any aspect of Winter, in my 70 years of observation. Science my a$$!
This guy probably does think were doomed. It a special type of narcissism that drives people to say these things.
Social workers are not scientists, let alone climate scientists. Have you tried golf yet Mayer?
Of all the human activities that have even the slightest potential to screw us over, high-altitude passenger jet travel is my #1.
We know too little about the chemistry of the stratosphere, especially on polar routes.
So if we throw billions of dollars at climate change , does that mean we will all live forever?

Don’t you realize that bigger government, more spending, and increased regulations are the solutions to everything and will lead us to everlasting nirvana? /sarc
Not to mention factually inaccurate.
Also relevant ... We need to start on the Y10k project ... whats going to happen to all these computer programs when we need the fifth digit place for the years after 9999???
Were solving problems, right?
We’re all going to die, but Mayer Hillman is going to die sooner than most of us.
“social scientist”...Is that a: an oxymoron, b: redundant, c: a contradiction in terms, or d: all of the above?!
The rapturous joy of Gaia worship.
If we stay on autopilot, yes, but we'll be passing a few hydrogen gas stations along the way.
I always get anxious and “doomy” when I drink too much caffeine. The doctor should check his intake.
It is interesting considering the Earth’s and Moon’s gravity, centrifugal/centripetal force, and polar magnetics! My instinct from physics training makes me believe the “hole” in the atmosphere above the poles is natural due to lower density upper atmospheric gasses being cast off by centrifugal force. Thereby creating like a chimney effect where the more dense gasses are pulled upward in a spiral. The “hole” is like the eye of a hurricane. We’re all gonna die regardless so what does it really matter!
I hear Uranus smells like rotten eggs..................
