PITTSBURGH - The statue of composer Stephen Foster that stood in Schenley Plaza in Pittsburghs Oakland neighborhood since 1940 was removed Thursday morning.
Controversial for its portrayal of Foster, a Lawrenceville native, with an African American man seated below him, the bronze statue has been scrutinized as racist for years.
Future of Pittsburgh's Stephen Foster statue in question Pittsburghs Art Commission decided with a unanimous vote on Oct. 25 that the 10x4 foot statue, which sits on a granite base, would come down within six months. Under city code, the Art Commission is responsible for overseeing the alteration, relocation or removal of all city-owned art.
Crews used a backhoe to remove the statue from its base. It was then loaded onto a flatbed truck and hauled away.

Before being placed in Schenley Plaza, the statue by sculptor Giuseppe Moretti was unveiled in Highland Park in 1900. Moretti also created the panthers on Schenley Parks Panther Hollow Bridge and the sculptures at the entrance to Highland Park.
The Schenley Plaza site that has been home to the Foster statue will not stay bare. Mayor Bill Pedutos office has been seeking public input in the selection of an African American woman to be honored with a statue.

Disgraceful!
This is also a design to provoke whites into saying and doing things that will justify their next step. They want to eventually turn this country into today's South Africa. Start paying attention to what goes on there and see our future in the making.
Imagine the inverse of this: Black statue removed, Mayor says he's seeking the selection of a white person to be honored in that location, and only white candidates need apply. I'm sure the old media, and social media, wouldn't be howling over that one.
Thanks for pointing me to the list. Madame Walker does sound interesting; at least she was an entrepreneur (a capitalist!—do you think that will pass muster with the Marxist crowd?).
He wrote the greatest song ever composed. “Beautiful Dreamer”.
You are so right.
As the statues come down, racism goes up.
Rather Martin Luther Kings statement that a man should be judged by his character, rather than the color of his skin. But the irony of it all is too much for tiny bigoted minds to comprehend as they judge statues by their form, not the man they commemorate.
There would be no New Orleans without him. Mary Landrieu's stupid brother, Mitch is the cause of this. He wants to run for higher office.
I was told, growing up, that Stephen Foster was a cousin of my grandmother (have no reason to not believe this).
We had an LP of his music, when I was a child, so grew up singing all those (racist) songs.
It’s obviously driven by Hillary losing the election.
The guy was a prophet! They all bet their money on the nag!
‘I bet my money the bobtail nag’ - that’s obviously HRC.
‘Somebody bet on the Bay.” - that’s obviously Trump.
Thanks.
It kills me. First you identify the gender and race of the statue, then you go find someone who fits the template and build a statue of her. So stupid
105 Homicides in 2017 alone, but it was more important to use city funds to remove the statue of Lee from Lee Circle.
I drive across the Suwannee River on a weekly basis, send him down here, we’ll find a spot for him.
public education
California is not being spared from the Left's revisionist crusade. Already, Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, named for the actor who was such an outspoken American patriot and supporter of traditional values has been renamed the Hollywood-Burbank Airport, and a stature of President William McKinley was removed in Arcata.
Likely targets in the near future will probably include MacArthur Park--after all, its namesake led military campaigns against nonwhites and was an outspoken anti-Communist.
I will not be the least bit surprised when John Wayne Airport and Wayne's statue in the terminal eventually come under attack. Not only was Wayne an outspoken conservative and anti-Communist, his movie Big Jim McClain championed the House Committee on Un-American Activities and The Alamo paid tribute to the heroes of the Texas Revolution. In the eyes of the Left, you cannot get any more politically incorrect.
Maybe the Stephen Foster Cultural Center in White Springs, Fla.
