GUEST COLUMN: Gov. Hickenlooper wrong on impact of legal pot
Colorado Springs Gazette ^ | April 23, 2018 | Peter Droege

Posted on 04/24/2018 5:43:15 PM PDT by george76

The governor of Colorado does our nation a grave disservice by misleading the public about the impact of marijuana on his state in the April 9 interview in Rolling Stone magazine.

Neither the governor's statements, nor the smoke rising from 4/20 events, can hide the fact that drug use and addiction, especially among youths, are a growing public health concern in communities across Colorado and the nation.

...

According to the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, Colorado is a national leader among 12-17-year-olds in:

(1) Last year marijuana use; (2) Last month marijuana use; and (3) The percentage of youths who tried marijuana for the first time.

A 2017 analysis by the Denver Post showed Colorado had experienced a 145 percent increase in the number of fatal crashes involving marijuana-impaired drivers between 2013 and 2016.

...

Westword magazine reports that increased homelessness, drugs, and crime are causing local residents and convention visitors to shun Denver's 16th Street Mall, once one of the most vibrant tourist destinations in the region.

The interview in Rolling Stone is not the first time that Gov. John Hickenlooper has made misstatements about the impact of marijuana in Colorado.

...

Most dispensaries in Colorado are in low-income neighborhoods, targeting young people who do not need another obstacle in fulfilling their great potential in life.

The “Chicken Pooper” is still governor out there? Wow.
He did Colorado a grave disservice when he made them trade their rifles for dope.
I doubt they’ve yet seen all the unintended consequences of that little ordeal yet. We used to go to Durango on vacation about once every couple of years. The last time we were there was the last time we’ll ever be back. Degenerates have taken over the place.

When I saw this I couldn't help but tell the story of a woman I met yesterday while I was sitting at the garage having my car worked on. She came in with her rat-sized dog on a leash. We got to talking, and she mentioned that she had been a Correctional Sergeant in a woman's prison in Colorado, and moved back to this area after she retired to be near her daughter. What a coincidence, I had worked for 25 years in the NY State prison system as an officer, and a Sergeant, but I'd only worked in male prisons. Turns out we were both the same age...70. She told me she'd been married 3 times, and I told her I'd learned my lesson after my one and only marriage that ended in divorce back in '79. Somehow our conversation got around to health problems, and she told me she had some, but didn't take any pills to treat them. Told me she drinks a glass of cabbage juice a day, and every night she smokes a joint so she can sleep.

She went to make herself a cup of coffee with the Kueurig machine they have, and looked for the sugar, but couldn't find it. All they had was Sweet & Low, and Equal. I asked her if she wanted a Splenda as I carry them in my purse. I'm diabetic so switched to Splenda when I was diagnosed. She went on a rant, telling me that those sugar substitutes aren't good for you, that they do all sorts of things to your insides, and will eventually kill you. She finally found some sugar and put it in her coffee, then decided she was hungry and took a walk across the street to the bakery. By the time she got back her car was ready, and she left. I had a good laugh over this woman, because after her tirade about sugar substitutes, I discovered she was a smoker, not just of marijuana, but regular cigarettes. I guess she doesn't realize what cigarettes do to your insides. I know both my parents and one sister died of lung cancer.

“He did Colorado a grave disservice when he made them trade their rifles for dope.”

False linkage. He spoke out against legalization =>

My town of origin has a new school and other improvements due in part to taxation of marijuana sales. There are two dispensaries in the town of 500 so I guess that makes De Beque the pot capital of Colorado.

Of the three MJ smokers I can't disassociate myself from:

1) One is dead of drugs at 30

2) A second toker, a biker who's also a retired sheriff's deputy, is tethered to oxygen at 70. His girlfriend, maybe 60 y-o, smokes MJ even more often and just had a heart attack.

3) A third toker, a neighbor and very long-term regular user, is also tethered to an oxygen bottle. For years, I never saw him outdoors. Retired at 60 from a grounds-keeping job, and inheriting millions, he can no longer visit his summer lake place.

Fake News.

Hickenlooper tried to stand in the way of legalized cannabis, he was steamrolled by the people.

Colorado’s economy has grown by leaps and bounds this decade with a standard of living most states would kill for.

Legalized cannabis is here and it is staying because it is the wish of the majority of voters.

Nanny Statists and Busy-bodies will have to find another dragon to slay. Their Jihad is over.

Wait a minute. You just said, “State law does not require coroners to test deceased drivers specifically for marijuana use in fatal wrecks — some do and some don’t.”

That means that no accurate figures can be generated. All these percentages can only be made up.

“Meaning they smoked sometime in the previous 3 or 4 weeks. They do not test for THC. They test for its metabolites which remain in your system for up to a month.”

Just one more thing that invalidates these figures. The only other place you can get away with experimental design this shoddy is in the greentard syndicate.

We hope the governor will use his considerable skills to foster a national dialogue to help limit the harm to youths and communities from legalized marijuana.

Funny. I thought the conclusion to this report would be to roll back pot legalization. Instead, it's just about more regulations...that won't work.

I personally think he is too white, the wrong gender and not far enough left for the DNC. He can actually be quite reasonable. That said, I am glad his tenure is up and hope we can get an R in the governor’s mansion this time. Super creep Jared Polis is running. Ugh.
