The Best Government Survey on Guns You've Never Heard Of
PJ Media ^ | 04/24/2018 | Rick Moran

A survey by the Centers for Disease Control on defensive gun use (DGU) in the United States that shows DGU happening more regularly than gun crimes has never been publicized.

Gary Kleck, a Florida State criminologist, conducted his own study of DGU and his results mirror those of the CDC.

The Daily Caller:

CDC’s data, collected a few years after Kleck’s survey, appears to corroborate his findings, Reason.com reported. The question asked in the CDC survey addressed the use or threatened use of a firearm to deter a crime. “During the last 12 months, have you confronted another person with a firearm, even if you did not fire it, to protect yourself, your property, or someone else?”

Kleck, upon reviewing the CDC’s data, noted just how close it came to mirroring his own.

The final adjusted prevalence of 1.24% therefore implies that in an average year during 1996–1998, 2.46 million U.S. adults used a gun for self-defense. This estimate, based on an enormous sample of 12,870 cases (unweighted) in a nationally representative sample, strongly confirms the 2.5 million past-12-months estimate obtained Kleck and Gertz (1995)….CDC’s results, then, imply that guns were used defensively by victims about 3.6 times as often as they were used offensively by criminals.

Many gun control advocates have complained about the fact that the CDC is limited with regard to research on gun violence. A 1996 amendment to a spending bill bars the organization from using congressionally allocated funds to “advocate or promote gun control.”

What those fighting for stronger gun-control generally leave out is the fact that the CDC is not barred from doing any research on gun violence — and the research it has done in the last two decades has largely corroborated Kleck’s findings.

Long ago when I was about 12 someone was trying to break down our front door. Kept bashing into it. My siblings, my mother and I were home. It had to be about 1am or so. Dad worked night shift, so we the responsible parties.

My brother and I went to the gun rack for the shotgun and rifle. Another bash on the door and we loudly announced our guns and that as soon as the door was busted open we would shoot.

It stopped. The guy left. Which tells me it was real, it intended harm, and that guns deterred it.

This kind of incident never makes it into the stats.

Funny thing is, like I said, 20 year old data so how accurate is it today? Great minds and all that.

"Funny thing is, like I said, 20 year old data so how accurate is it today? Great minds and all that."

The ratios are unlikely to change, though the absolute numbers probably do. Given the increases in both population and gun ownership, the most likely change is an increase in incidents.

This post goes to show that even young kids properly trained can handle firearms responsibly even though under extreme duress. Great job protecting you family and making your parents proud.

Thanks. We were a shooting family, so we were very familiar with those guns. What sticks in my mind was dad telling us over the years that it was legal to shoot once they entered the house.

The other thing that I vividly remember is that the guy would have been in a serious hurt. Even now, I recall being utterly calm.

I’m LESS afraid of someone trying to harm me than I am of my own Government trying to disarm me!

2A All The Way, Baby. :)

You can ALL see clearly that disarming, ‘We The People’ is the underlying wish of the DemonRat Party.

Power over all of us is what they really want. And, Good Luck with THAT, LOL!

20 years ago we didn’t have the number of illegal aliens coming into the US as we have in the past 10-15 years, which included a lot of active and future criminals, esp. from the drug cartels and gangs.

The figures for gun use for protection should be at least double that of the studies.

"The figures for gun use for protection should be at least double that of the studies."

In actual fact it is probably much more than double. One of the most hilarious gun studies I have ever heard of is when two anti-gun researchers working for the Department of Justice (Cook and Ludwig)set out to prove Kleck's very first study wrong.

That first Kleck study put the number of DGU at 6MM. Cook and Ludwig did what they considered a better study, and THEIR OWN NUMBERS put the DGU at not six, but twenty million per year. They spent most of the conclusions section showing how THEIR OWN STUDY had to have been badly flawed "somehow".
