The nation's police chiefs are rising up against another conservative crime-fighting initiative, sending a letter to leaders of Congress on Thursday opposing a bill that would allow gun owners with concealed-carry permits in one state to carry their concealed weapons in all 50 states.
The letter from the International Association of Chiefs of Police, representing 18,000 police departments across the United States, and Boston Police Commissioner William Evans targets the "Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act," which passed the House in December and is now assigned to the Senate Judiciary Committee. The letter is endorsed by 473 police officials from 39 states, from large departments such as Los Angeles and Atlanta to small departments such as Spanish Fork, Utah, and Falls Church, Virginia.

What do the elected Sheriffs think?
In CT state law requires local PD or to take prints and certain specific documents required specified by state law and subbit to Stare PD to run background checks. If you pass the state/FBI check the local PD is required to issue a temp permit which you bring to the the State PD to exchange for the “permanent” laminated DL style one. IIRC, the temp one is good for something like 30 days and only lets you carry not buy.
Some local PDs will “require” extra documents/steps not specified OR permitted by state law, such as references, home visits, interviews, etc. It;s either play their game or get denied and go before the state to force them to issue it. Of course, theor aren’t any consequences for denying every permit for no reason so they just keep doing it.
“A fed law that required equivalent reciprocity wouldnt help and wouldnt reduce confusion.
There would still be state permits that werent federally recognized.”
Well go get yourself a Utah CCW. It’s good in 38 states, and you can get it as a non-resident with a class and $47. Good for five years, renewable by mail.
“After all, just having progressives is t what makes for a Hell Hole. Their ideology has to have born fruit.”
Well, do you think Texas’ major “$hit hole cities” are any different than those you mention, aside from the fact that you might get away with carrying personal protection there a little easier? I mean Austin is Berkeley without SF Bay, Houston has had a succession of really strange liberal mayors, and SA is run by Mexicans. Time is now for you to admit that urban Texas is as big a mess as are the Midwestern cities you mention. It’s just that they haven’t been $hit holes for the past half century, but they are now. Furthermore, if “rural Texas” doesn’t take some action now, you will be subjects in the not too distant future.
So why do retired LE officers get to carry in 50 states but those of us who get background checks are not able to?
They dont include former members of the U.S.Military either and if anyone should be qualified to carry a firearm nation wide its them.
Good catch.
Arrogant four-starred fascists lecturing us peons to turn in our guns and trust the Muslims is what they are. F’em!
B.S.
When seconds count, the police will be there in minutes.
I wonder does this entail, or lead to, a federal standard for training and qualification?
Not saying that would be a bad thing, or good.
It leads toward national Constitutional carry.
Anyone who can legally carry concealed in their home state can carry in any state in the Union, under that state’s concealed carry laws.
There are 12 states that do not require a permit to carry concealed now.
In 2004, there was one.
Lots of times we find there are “unintended consequences” to laws (I usually believe them to be intended myself).
Was wondering if Socialists could pass a national reciprocity law that superseded state laws, and resulted in tighter rules.
But I don’t believe they could negate state laws.
No words from these traitors on BLM and cops getting murdered by democrats of course, notwithstanding a few cops have been saved by CCW/militia already
There about 18,000 police districts in the United States. One must note the article was cleverly written to make it seem all 18,000 support this measure. This is pure Bravo Sierra.
"The letter from the International Association of Chiefs of Police, representing 18,000 police departments across the United States"
They do represent 18,000 police departments but that does not mean 18,000 are in agreement. If you want to know the truth ask a cop in the street or patrol what he thinks about law abiding citizens carrying firearms. With rare exceptions they support the second amendment.
I live out in the countryside. There are 5 private firing ranges within one mile and one is on my land. My neighbors are responsible law abiding citizens. When I hear gunfire it does not frighten me. It is the sound of freedom. When I hear gunfire that I can not identify I have been known to drive over just to see what the hell they are shooting. Without exception I have been invited to shoot it. I love where I live in Texas.
I have been shooting since I was 12 years old. When I was 13 I was allowed to have my own weapon (22 bolt action Remington nylon) in my bedroom and the ammunition. I am 69 years old today and have never raised a weapon in anger and fortunately not in self defense. I would if necessary.
Law-abiding citizens will not be a problem under reciprocity. Criminals dont care if it exists or not. So just another stupid attempt to punish good citizens.
Lib police chiefs.
All the studies I’ve seen show that CCW holders are the lowest crime committing demographic. You’d think that cops would be happy to have such around. I suppose that the studies I’ve seen are only anecdotal, but I think we deserve more than this slam-dunk “we don’t want our citizens armed” stuff.
There was a time back in the 1970’s when you could count on the IACP to be on the side of the citizen/victim. Now it’s just the opposite.
The same for the farleft/liberal organization roughly entitled “Police Research Forum or Council”. Ex-chief failure Patrick Murphy became the head of it and it has sucked ever since.
A massive set of professional control freaks united against the constitution. No surprises.
As a 27 year police officer... and still going... I have NEVER had a single issue with anyone that has a concealed carry permit. EVER. Have had some attitudes from open carry types on occasion... the rank and file offficers that I know dont have issue with this...
