North and South Korea on Friday set up their first ever direct telephone hotline between their leaders, ahead of a historic summit next week that aims to resolve nuclear tensions with Pyongyang and bring peace to the Korean Peninsula.
An official in Seoul confirmed that a successful four minute test call was conducted between South Koreas presidential office and Pyongyangs most powerful institution, the State Affairs Commission. The connection was smooth and the voice quality was very good. It was like calling next door, he said.
The hotline is intended to prevent misunderstandings between the neighbouring countries, who are still technically at war.
However, it will be used more immediately over the next few days when North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in speak for the first time shortly before they meet face to face at a summit on in the demilitarised border zone (DMZ) between their two countries.
The meeting will only be the third summit of its kind since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War and the first since 2007, when Mr Kims father, Kim Jong-il met with then South Korean leader, Roh Moo-hyun.
The talks next Friday, in the Peace House on the southern side of the DMZ could prove to be a significant signpost for unprecedented negotiations on North Koreas denuclearisation between Mr Kim and US President Donald Trump which are anticipated in late May or early June.

Positive development, for sure.
Things are happening mighty fast. I’m suspicious.
Trump is going to get a Noble Peace Prize for this....MAGA
These changes in the world and bringing peace to a 70 year old war and de-nucularzation between warring parties that has never happened in the history of mankind is merely a distraction to avoid investigation about golden shower giving Russian prostitutes and Russian collusion. /sarcasm
Susan Rice said this was not possible & we need to learn to live with N. Korean nukes....
Greatest non-military foreign policy achievement since President Polk negotiated the Oregon Territory from Britain.
The things that count occurred last October 10th.
A couple hundred Nork nuclear techs were in a test tunnel preparing some kind of extravaganza that was supposed to scare the world when the tunnel collapsed, killing them all.
A most convenient earthquake.
It probably had some help. And Kim Jong-un figured out that earthquakes like that could target him next, without warning and with no way to defend against them. And around that time someone let him know that he could give up while saving face, or he could lose the hard way. Art of the deal. At least that’s the story some are saying explains Kim’s sudden change of heart.
Are you nuts??? They’ll NEVER give President Trump credit for this or anything else!!! And frankly, ever since Obama got one, who cares? Clearly that stupid award means nothing.
Trump should just remember the wise words of President Reagan, “There’s no limit to what you can accomplish when you don’t worry about who gets the credit.”
Yeah, right.
My prediction is anybody but Trump. So, Kim Jong-un alone, or with Merkel, and whatshisname, the current UN head.
Maybe they'll add the preceding UN head, the S. Korean guy, too.
“Herro. Is this Pizza-boy?”
“Solly. Wong numba...”
Oh come on, he never bowed to Kim.
“:^)
“Hello, Moon? This is Kim. Please order large anchovy pizza with squid and have delivered to the DMZ ASAP”.
“Trump is going to get a Noble Peace Prize for this....M”
The Nobel is essentially “Marxist of the Year” award. It would be an insult.
I don’t think he actually worries about getting credit I just think he has to defend himself when nobody gives him any credit at all and I’m okay with that
