A tweet by U.S. President Donald Trump declaring his support for a U.S. pastor on trial in Turkey has trample(d) on Turkeys independent judiciary, the pro-Turkish government Daily Sabah newspaper said on Wednesday.
Evangelical Pastor Andrew Brunson, a long-term resident of the western Turkish city of Izmir, was arrested in October 2016 and charged with aiding and abetting the Fethullah Gülen movement, an Islamist movement that Turkey blames for masterminding a coup attempt in July 2016 and labels a terrorist organization.
"Pastor Andrew Brunson, a fine gentleman and Christian leader in the United States, is on trial and being persecuted in Turkey for no reason. They call him a spy but I am more a spy than he is. Hopefully he will be allowed to come home to his beautiful family where he belongs!" Trump tweeted on Wednesday, two days after the pastor broke down during a court hearing in Izmir.
Brunsons trial has deepened the rift between Ankara and Washington, and raised concerns that the pastor is being tried on flimsy evidence and political charges. A former U.S. ambassador likened Brunson to a hostage that Turkey hopes to trade for the extradition of Gülen, who lives in self-imposed exile in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania.

Looks like Turkey’s “independent judiciary” is as corrupt as ours.
HOORAY President Donald J. Trump!
Far Far Far worse.
There is only one law in Turkey, whatever Erdogan the Islamist says at any point in time.
Yes. And this does not surprise me at all from President Trump.
I hear Turkeys are so stupid that they will look at the sky during a rainstorm with their mouths open, and drown. The country is appropriately named.
“I hear Turkeys are so stupid that they will look at the sky during a rainstorm with their mouths open, and drown.”
Their eyes are on the sides of Their heads. If the were looking at the sky their mouths would not be pointing up.
God Bless Donald John Trump
Tame Turkeys are.
Wild Turkeys are anything but stupid. They are quick, can see extremely well and are not really that good to eat. I much prefer the domesticated varieties.
There are a lot of wild turkeys here. And deer, wild russet hogs (part Russian boar), turkey, quail and dove.
I love quail hunting. Love to eat quail more.
FR factoid of the day.
I am speaking of domesticated birds
If we are going to get tough with a nation in that area, Turkey would be a better candidate than that midget Assad, who is who is not persecuting Christians.
Correct. In contrast Erdogan set up plans to have more ancient churches made into functioning mosques in Turkey
Erdogan’s obsessions on the Ottoman Empire recovery extends far beyond the “Region”.
This Hitler-mach2 must be stopped. The consequences of not, are far beyond what most people are aware of.
He has reseeded ISIS in Afrin and is rebuilding the Rebel Jihadi movement under Turk control. It won’t be long before we are forced to deal with this.
No, it is not our obligation. But we will be a part of it.
