"Israel has still not learned the lessons from the Holocaust. Had it taken the meaning to heart, it would stop the ongoing atrocities in Syria."
We've been inundated with such messages every since the Syrian bloodbath commenced in 2011. While these vacuous statements are heard constantly, they reach a fever constantly pitch when Yom Hashoah season rolls around.
According to this view, Israel is betraying its Jewish heritage by letting Assad butcher his people unopposed.
I've always hated hearing people say this because it's the worst kind of virtue signaling. Imagine you were handed the keys: What would you do?
Would you invade Syria and fight Bashar Assad alongside ISIS? Would you fight ISIS side by side with Hezbollah? What happens when Putin gets mad that Israel rushed hell-bent into his sphere of influence?
Should Israel call up 40,000 reservists and start an all-out war between Israel, Syria, Iran, Hezbollah and Russia? What will you tell a mother whose son in the IDF was killed fighting to save Syrian civilians in Douma? What will you say when Assad flattens Tel Aviv with missiles?
And if you were prepared to pay such a price, how would it work tactically? Should the IDF capture all of Syria? Should Nahal and Kfir Brigade soldiers patrol Homs as a kind of peacekeeping force?
In addition, the entire paradigm that Israel needs to become the world's social worker because of what Hitler did to us is fundamentally wrong. If suffering genocide gives you a special moral task then why don't the Armenians have this responsibility? After all, almost 3 million of them were killed by Turkey in the early 20th century.
What about the American Indians? They also suffered a bloodbath. Why do they get off scot free? Stalin systematically starved 3.5 million...

Something assuredly will go wrong. The usual suspects will see to it.
Amen.
The brilliant David Horowitz pointed out the advertising skills of today's New Left.
And, yes.
Their blood.
Are on your hands.
You cannot wash them like Pontus Pilate.
But, you already know that.
You have never been here for the Free Republic.
You have never.
That’s right.
Take your meds.
Wow. You can misquote. Have fun talking to the mods.
I am sure you know them. Good to have friends when your arguments can’t quite make it.
Let it be, as my favourite band once said.
“Good to have friends”
Go find yours.
Read Lev’s article. His view of reality is both liberal/left and historically inaccurate.
It is not only about “to intervene or not” is Syria, it is about the whole world situation as viewed by an educated, reality-based “geopolitical and strategic view”.
History says that aggressors and genocidal maniacs/leaders never stop at their borders. Why should they if they are on a basically unopposed roll? Hitler - Chamberlain - Munich anyone?
“History says that aggressors and genocidal maniacs/leaders never stop at their borders. Why should they if they are on a basically unopposed roll? Hitler - Chamberlain - Munich anyone?”
OK. So we shouldn’t sign any ruinous concessions with Syria. Got it. There are two aggressors making themselves at home there, in addition to Assad, who’s not exactly Mr. Rogers either. One of them already has nukes. The other wants them. His opponents are also genocidal maniacs. We’re on our side of the border, loaded for bear. America has carriers standing by. What do you propose to do, with your elevated perspective of history?
Lev asks that question, and refutes the notion of Israel’s supposed moral obligation to “intervene”. His historical references are to illustrate the absurdity of imposing supposed moral obligations to act as globocop on peoples who’ve suffered genocide. So with what point do you disagree with Lev. Don’t hand me that “his view of reality”. Specifics.
“Israel has still not learned the lessons from the Holocaust. Had it taken the meaning to heart, it would stop the ongoing atrocities in Syria.”
Idiotic statement.
The Jews DID learn the lesson - don’t live in a country controlled by a non-Jewish majority that can strip you of life, liberty, and property with a few strokes of pen.
Intervening in other idiots civil wars was definitely NOT part of the lesson of the Holocaust.
You’re refuting what the author quotes solely in order to refute. It’s a short article. Really. What’s the matter with kids today, that they can’t read 750 words to get the full context.
