Researchers have found a deposit of rare-earth minerals off the coast of Japan that could supply the world for centuries, according to a new study.
The study, published in the journal Nature on Tuesday, says the deposit contains 16 million tons of the valuable metals.
Rare-earth minerals are used in everything from smartphone batteries to electric vehicles. By definition, these minerals contain one or more of 17 metallic rare-earth elements (for those familiar with the periodic table, those are on the second row from the bottom).

Elk Creek is about 50 miles east of me, we haven’t heard much about this for a while.
Mountain Pass, California, on I-15 just south of the Nevada
state line has a VERY large deposit. The mine and mineral production facilities were closed a couple of years ago do to China undercutting them on the price. (Everything is in place to restart.)

The mine is supposed to be reopened under new ownership. Unfortunately the new owners are Chinese-led MP Mine Operations LLC.
16 million tons, and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt.
