GOP congressman: 'Most of the public' doubts Assad used chemical gas
Washington Examiner ^ | April 13, 2018

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., says he believes a majority of the public doubts the official U.S. government contention that Syrian President Bashar Assad used chemical gas against the final rebel-held town near Damascus.

“Anybody who has tried to explain to me why Assad would do this sounds like a conspiracy theorist,” said Massie, a libertarian Republican from Kentucky. “It requires really contorted thinking to think Assad did this. You have to come up with very complicated reasons.”

“I cannot think of a reason he would,” Massie said.

I’ve consistently stated that the US has no compelling national security interest in Syria.

I’ve also noted that the US had no concerns about Syria until Qatar and Saudi Arabia were refused the right to build a natural gas pipeline across their country. Then suddenly it was ‘so important’ that Assad had to go.

Syria is a sovereign nation and regardless of what I may or may not think of their elected leader I believe they have the right to say ‘no’ to foreign infrastructure projects.

I do not believe it was in the national interest of the USA to agitate, organize, and then arm the groups that later coalesced into ISIL/ISIS.

Further, Syria is a longtime ally of Russia and (unlike the USA) Russia does have a compelling national security interest in Syria given that their only naval base in the Mediterranean is in Syria. Russia has every right...if not an obligation...to defend their interests.

None of that means I like Russia or Syria.

Stop trying to smear me as if I did.

"Hitler didn’t pose a threat to the US, so you would have said the same to those objecting to his killing Jews? Concentration camps, gassing people. Not our problem, ignore it? What happened to Never Again?"

Oh f*cking Puhhlease - what a stretch. Hitler's gigantic war machine that was strolling through Europe vs Assad's little crappy 3rd world military that he can't even put down the rebels and allowed ISIS to grow?

No, I don't like that Assad gassed his own people, but I don't want any boots on that ground. I also don't want to see that shit hole country escalate us into a bigger conflict due to a US major missile/bombin attack. There are Russians there. Think about that.

I'm sick of seeing our best die and be maimed for a ME civil war. I'd rather see them all die than one more of our children. I'm so over policing the World and nation-building. I admit I was big supporter of our invasion of Iraq when the entire world believed he had mass amounts of WMD's. Other than a few old chemical canisters found, it was for nothing! We had to go back in and fight ISIS. We're still fighting and losing lives in Aftganiscrap.

F*ck the ME, let them kill each other while we stay engaged diplomatically, economically, or threat of obliteration like we did with Germany and Japan.

Think Trident.

So you think “All American lives are at risk” but you simultaneously lament that the window has closed on a tepid, impotent and ultimately meaningless “immediate response” which will do nothing to prevent another such event?

The government is always allowed secrecy, even when they’re covering up the illegal activity? Remind me again what amendment that is.

Nope, you summed it up fine. I admit I’m not following this closely. Is this about Muslims killing Muslims? If so- I DON’T CARE! I just wish they’d ALL off each other and do civilization a favor. IF they threaten us, or Americans, that’s something else-but as long as they are doing each other I say we stay the hell out of all third-world sh**holes or help them finish each other off. Muslims killing Muslims is a win-win IMO.

Syria war isn't about what the muslim citizens want or not.....people are not significant apart from using them to plaster across the news media. Syria is a pivotal nation for Iran, Turkey, Russia and the Globalist gurus who want to set up Global Governance.....each one has their own agenda so Syria's location to each and all is significant.

Well said, and thanks for the background facts that I didn't include in my above posts.

NOT ONE MORE LIFE FOR THAT SHIT HOLE. Let Russia have it.

Think Tridents. Russia understands MAD even with with a warm water port. Iran doesn't, but that's another box of worms. I say start targeting the Mullahs with SEAL incursions and reigning bombs are their nuke facilities. Just kill those dictators so the western-loving Persians can join the World community. I've talked to many Persians and they despise the Mullahs. They love the USA.

~~~~~
It physically will not prevent another event, no. Of course not. It’s a retaliation, not a defensive measure.
Do you think the Russians and Syrians want us to retaliate?
To answer that question, just look at the excuses, threats, and posturing that they have been doing.
So no, the world doing nothing when chemical weapons are being used on women and children is a much worse signal to send than a response, even if more symbollic in nature. In the language of geopolitical diplomacy, being weak against aggression is an invitation for more aggression.
As if the people still will not be imprisoned, starved, bombed, tortured, executed etc, but hey, no gas was used. 5000 civilians are missing over there, presumed killed by the rebels.
Maybe Juan Mccain could ask his Syrian AQ compadres if they had anything to do with it. After they put their white helmets and garden hoses back in the closet.
"I do not believe it was in the national interest of the USA to agitate, organize, and then arm the groups that later coalesced into ISIL/ISIS."
The US had done that time and gain. The perfect example is providing Afghanistan with shoulder-fired Stingers to shoot down Soviet aircraft during their war. I's been called "Wilson's War" after a politician who increased funding to support Afghanistan against our Cold War adversary. After saving their little tribal no-nothing goat-humping butts, what do they do later? We all know.
Our military arms industrial complex sells to anyone the fedgov allows. I've never understood why that is. Talk about needing gun control. Yeah, I know the claim is if we don't, France, Russia, England and others will, so it's good for US jobs.
If the UN had any real conscience, other than bitching about Israel, they would focus efforts to reduce or eliminate weapons sells unless a nation needed them for obvious defense. But then, who are they to make that decision?
BTW, why don't I see any blue helmets in Syria? Color me confused. Don't get me wrong. I'd like to see the UN disbanded. Just making a point about its hypocrisy and incompetence. What a bunch of worthless busy-body socialist/communist bureaucrats they are. Sorry, got off point.
“I’ve talked to many Persians and they despise the Mullahs. They love the USA.”
My husband (USMC ret) says the exact same thing. The regular Iranian people love America and Americans and they hate the mullahs and they’re starting to fight back against the Islamic Republic.
"So no, the world doing nothing when chemical weapons are being used on women and children is a much worse signal to send than a response, even if more symbollic in nature. In the language of geopolitical diplomacy, being weak against aggression is an invitation for more aggression."
So where have you been with all the wars in Africa that has killed millions in recent times? Where has the USA been? Why haven't we sent boots in there? That's okay to ignore because they used machetes instead of hi-tech NCB weapons? Ever hear anything about the mass murders in Nigeria or the Mali,Algeria,Libya Triangle that has gone past machetes.
There are currently fifteen African countries involved in war, or are experiencing post-war conflict and tension. In West Africa, the countries include Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Togo. In East Africa, the countries include Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, Uganda. In Central Africa, the countries include Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda. In North Africa, the country is Algeria and in South Africa, the countries include Angola and Zimbabwe.
Point being, as all those sovereign nations keep killing themselves by 10,000's of thousands yearly due to civil wars , tribal conflicts, border disputes, we should waste our children's lives in Syria? Where should we police next? Tough to decide with all the genocide that goes on in Africa. I know, pick a card and kill our youth.
Don't bother with the peacenik meme. You won't find another person on this board that it so willing to be cannon fodder in the right fight. I would volunteer to walk point even now to defend my Country, not all the shit holes above.
"...they’re starting to fight back against the Islamic Republic."
Don't know if they still are, but they had a great opportunity some years back with their huge demonstrations, but Obama gave them NO support. We both know why.
If you want, tell your husband I thank him for being a Marine, and was proud to be his bellhop on the flight deck in the Gator Navy. He will get it if you don't.
