LA Painting Its Streets White To Combat Global Warming
CBS Los Angeles ^ | April 10, 2018

In the race to combat climate change, the city of Los Angeles is employing a surprising new tactic — covering its streets in a grayish-white coating known as CoolSeal.

It’s sprayed onto the roadway with trucks, then spread across the surface with squeegees. However, its impact extends far beyond the edge of the pavement.

Los Angeles, like so many other modern cities, is encased in thousands of miles of asphalt. And dark-colored asphalt absorbs between 80 and 95 percent of the sun’s rays, heating up not just the streets themselves but the entire surrounding area.

By cooling the ambient air, lighter-colored asphalt can also help prevent heat-related illnesses and deaths. Its higher reflectivity can save on energy needed to illuminate streets and parking lots when the sun starts to set. And according to the EPA, the air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and water quality depletion driven by heat islands can be mitigated by cool pavements as well.

The innovative sealcoat is admittedly very pricey, with L.A. reportedly footing a $40,000 bill for every mile it “paints.” But advocates say its benefits may just be priceless.

I wonder which Democrat officials bought stock in CoolRay and Foster Grant before doing this?

I recall some story of Kali DOT not using common sense on a snow-prone road into Nevada. They insist on using white paint for the lane markings, even though yellow has proven to be not only more effective with snow cover, but more durable as well.

Somebody must have a financial interest in titanium dioxide.

NV? They use yellow on their side of the state line on such roads.

Their bringing in a billion illegal semolians with paintbrushes to do the actual painting.

LA Painting Its Streets White To Combat Global Warming

Leave it to the California native idiot breeding grounds.
They are always on the leading edge of technology...

Those geniuses can't even get a dam spillway right
They destroyed a State water management system that took a century and many generations and trillions$ (in today's dollars) to create, and caused a drought.

Allowed trillions of acre feet of water from the North State to flow to the ocean, and destroyed the fishing in the north to satisfy morons in the LA area. And the native fish and other critters in the north all died anyway.

They exported half of our water to create a jungle in the southern desert.

Oh yes, the money statement.
Painting streets white will confuse drivers, create glaring blindness and have the rest of the world laughing themselves to peeing their pants.

It doesn't have to be white; just what is referred to as "IR white..." just ask any Jr. High "Science Fair" participant.

Depending on the reflectivity you will get sunburned standing on the street with all the reflected light rays....driving on a sunny day may burn out your eyeballs out ....try driving on a wet street on a sunny day with the sunlight reflecting off the water on the road and try and see what happens to your eyesight.
Finally the reflected light will heat the surrounding air..who didnt vet this idea?

Idea more suitable to l.a.....
Turn the rheostat down on the sun....or travel only at nite..

Why, rainbow colors, of course! With emphasis on p**** pink!

OK, once again I had to check for an Onion byline. I keep hoping beyond hope that I have seen the ultimate depth of Libtard Lunacy but my hopes are always for not. Liberals are truly a black hole of stupidity from which no rational thought can escape.

the eroded road paint will eventually end up in the water/ocean. So much for the democrats claim of wanting to save the environment

Instead, how about all colored people be required to be painted white.

Tell me it’s April Fool’s Day all over again! Idiocy in government, it never ends. We’re going to need that black asphalt to warm our cities now that we’re falling into a little ice age. But better yet, burn coal to heat our homes. Maybe we should burn liberal politicians, they’re full of hot air.

"Somebody must have a financial interest in titanium dioxide."

Toxic Tattoo Ink (Titanium Oxide) Accumulates In Lymph Nodes, Causing Life-Long Cancer Risk

"(Natural News) Scientists now warn that colored tattoos can increase the risk of cancer. The pigmented dyes used by most tattoo parlors contain a controversial chemical known as titanium dioxide. This compound is added to tattoo ink to give certain colors. But while the chemical is efficient in exacting the correct shade desired, it is also associated to an assortment of debilitating conditions, not least of which is cancer.

I guess there's always tantalum pentoxide.

Used like titanium dioxide, as a layer in telescope mirror coatings.

Two predictions.

One, Los Angeles will have the dirtiest nastiest looking streets in the country. Imagine what white streets will look like after being driven on by millions of cars with dirty black tires, and half of the engines leaking oil.

Two. More motorcycle accidents. Asphalt absorbs oil. Coated sshphalt, not so much. As the center of each white coated lane becomes oilier, they will eventually become untollerably slippery. Motorcycle riders will be going down from making a simple lane change with a bit too much throttle.

Unintended consequences are a bitch.

A roof coating?

Also, I thought asphalt was a carcinogen in California.

“Were these the same guys that wanted to float little black balls on all the reservoirs to prevent evaporation?”

Well, you can buy floating balls for your swimming pool which are safer than a sheet covering, retain heat, and curb evaporation. So I’d say the idea isn’t stupid at all.

Yikes! As a young man, I hated riding my motorcycle in the rain mostly because of slick streets. My wife made me give up riding. Made sense, after I accidentally spilled her off my bike on a mountain trail and she got bruised. LA is in for an increase of lawsuits!
