Cynthia Nixon's answer to a question that has perplexed New Yorkers for generations is turning heads on social media.
Nixon, the Sex and the City actor challenging Gov. Andrew Cuomo, was asked by The New York Times Magazine where she believes upstate New York begins, a query that regularly sparks fierce debate — and a wide-ranging array of responses — on Twitter and Facebook.
Her answer? Somewhere near Ithaca.
"I don't think the Hudson Valley is upstate," Nixon said, according to the Times. "Once you get to Ithaca, by around there, you're starting to get upstate."

being a native NYstater, upstate always seemed to mean anything north of Poughkepsie, or just over the board from Scranton...

Sadly, there aren't enough people to vote for a GOPer; there are tons of damned ILLEGALS in NYC, L.I., and even in other places in N.Y. state; not to mention the brain dead who won't vote for a GOPer no matter what. :-(
And lastly....the ONLY reasons that de Blasio has ever won any election, is that only 1/4 ( and that number includes lots of ILLEGALS, so even this number is inaccurate )of those who could vote for the mayor of NYC, turned out to vote; the rest just ignored it. Ergo, it's still far more people/votes, than can be turned out upstate.

I hosted a meeting in Nyack, calling it our organization’s downstate meeting, and was swarmed by Manhattanites correcting my “error”.

No, there’s big region north of Rockland and Westchester County that is deemed (by folks living there) to be “Central New York - including Syracuse, Utica and Albany. So they’d tell you to go north of that to be in “Upstate” NY.
That seems reasonable, just like Manhattan gets divided into three nearly equal geographic regions - Downtown, Midtown and Uptown - so the same should go when dividing up regions in the state.
I’m at my sister’s in Westchester. This place is the boonies. I’m pretty sure Upstate starts in Yonkers.
