On Wednesday, 28 March, 2018, the West Maypole Avenue Church of Christ was having a Bible study that started at 7:30 p.m. At 8:09 p.m., the study was interrupted by 27-year-old Kenneth Baines, who announced an armed robbery. A 57-year-old armed church member was seated inside. The church member was legally armed and had a concealed carry permit.
It seems likely that he was a member of a voluntary church security team, as later reports refer to him as a “security guard”, but no report mentions that he had a security guard license, or that he was paid as a security guard. From suntimes.com on 29 March, 2018:
A 57-year-old man was sitting in a the church at 8:09 p.m. in the 4400 block of West Maypole when a 27-year-old man walked in and announced a robbery, according to Chicago Police.
Maypole Avenue Church of Christ is located at 4400 W. Maypole.
The two men then started shooting at each other, police said. The older man was struck in the left arm and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition. The robber was shot multiple times in the chest and was in critical condition at Stroger Hospital.
The 57-year-old legally owned his gun, police said.

Interesting point in a couple of ways. Why did they not tell us if the robber was a legal carrier as well? /rhetorical
Would it be because a) he was, and thus background checks are once again proven not to be the panacea they’re made out to be? or b) he was, ho hum, illegally armed, and cracking down on the general population will be a feel-good exercise at best?

That’s the same issue in our church. We have a State Police Officer, our Minister, and a number of other, including myself who carry.
My Uncle Sam told me that too.
He needs a bigger gun. Or the ambulance crew needs to drive more slowly.

Did Mayor Rahm rush to the scene to comfort the church members.
My guess is that The Ballerina went to the hospital to comfort the perp.

Bullets may take an odd turn inside the body. They may expand, or not. And if they don’t hit a major artery, the heart, or the CNS, there is no telling if the shootee will die or live another 30 years.You can shoot someone center of mass with a 44 magnum and just punch a neat hole, or shoot with a 22 LR and remove part of the heart.
Some bad guys lose interest in a fight as soon as they see another gun. Some stop fighting with one hole in them. And some keep shooting back long after they have been fatally wounded:

I carry to church at all times, and as you said ,no telling how many other members do also. Along with the uniformed officer we have at the front door during every service.
