How Gun Ownership Protects Citizens From An Abusive Government
The Federalist ^ | April 4, 2018 | Dylan Moore

Posted on 04/04/2018 11:25:30 AM PDT by detective

Whenever the gun control debate returns to the national stage after another horrific shooting, media outlets and social media accounts lob the same few talking points at one another. Among the most puzzling and misunderstood arguments for less gun control is this: Gun ownership protects people from a potentially authoritarian government.

Those on the Left tend to scoff at this proposition. What could one person in a rural town with an AR-15, say, do to combat a military equipped with tanks, drones, and fully automatic weapons? Admittedly, not very much. But those who are unconvinced that civilian gun ownership protects against authoritarianism would do well to give the argument some more thought.

Politicians and media types claim the United States would be safer without guns. They are wrong.

In order to get rid of the First Amendment and the Bill of Rights, the government needs to get rid of the Second Amendment. Our freedom depends on citizens ability to protect themselves and their families from authoritarian regimes. It is necessary to preserve our rights and our freedoms.

You don’t have to take on the U.S. military to stop Government abuses.

There's 1,281,900 in the US Military and more than 3,000,000 guns in America.

I thinks if there every was a constitutional crisis utilizing guns that most in the military would be on the side of the Constitution, however.

These idiots will never realize that all of the other amendments are still in place because of the Second Amendment. It’s about prevention of tyranny.

Guns are no deterrent to out of control governments IF YOU NEVER USE THEM.

Just sayin’...

Lighter weapons and ambush can render heavier weapons.

Besides, many of the members of the military would be unwilling to turn loose those 1.2 million guns on their countrymen.

Clearly, the point of the Amendment was precisely that.

Right & Duty To Keep & Bear Arms.

Note, the function goes to multiple aspects of the quest. The presence of guns in private homes is not only a restraint on an over-reaching bureaucracy. It reduces the need for a larger Armed Services. (The need, of course has expanded over the last three generations because of specific threats; but it is still less than it would be without those armed citizens.

” What could one person in a rural town with an AR-15, say, do to combat a military equipped with tanks, drones, and fully automatic weapons?”

After WWII Stalinists warned Marshal Tito not to oppose Soviet demands.

“What will you do with your old rifles when the Soviets roll into Yugoslavia in their new tanks,” they asked.

Tito is said to have replied: “We will wait for them to climb out of their new tanks and then shoot them with our old rifles.”

I think you left out a couple zeros. 300,000,000 guns. Some say 500,000,000.

Well, I will say this much. Right now I am a law abiding taxpayer. Turn me into a criminal overnight and I will start doing what criminals do. Shoot cops. Seems pretty logical to me.

Consider two dinks with a pressure cooker can paralyze a major city. Remember February 3, 2013, ex-cop Christopher Dorner brought Los Angeles to its’ knees with 9 days of revenge shootings. Our civilization is very, very fragile.

” What could one person in a rural town with an AR-15, say, do to combat a military equipped with tanks, drones, and fully automatic weapons? Admittedly, not very much. “

Laughable. It can stop all such menaces right in their tracks. The US Army has 1260 M-1s, and the Marines have 196. Thats 29 tanks per state -IF- they all worked on the same day and were brought home from every corner of the earth.
And tankers are easy to defeat... you shoot their fuel truck driver. You snipe them when they step out to piss.

Drone operators? Ok, so you don’t carry that AR 15 openly down the city street like a moron. But that drone pilot has a family, and he won’t like getting photos of them in the mail with crosshairs. Drone pilots at Nellis have to stop at gas station as they drive home...don’t they? They go to bars and try to get laid too. Good luck figuring out that the girl who is so friendly actually lost her brother and dad to a Hellfire missile attack.

The contractor who works on the drones and builds the missiles is usually in some industrial park with little to no security.

Bases and families are wide open targets. Units would have also to be very careful about individual soldiers who would defect with equipment to the rebels. They won’t like being sent against their home and friends. Say an Apache gunship takes off and destroys a flight line of AH-64s. It is found a day later abandoned on a county road in rebel territory with a fre rounds through the engine and instrument panel.

The fact is, our military is terribly arranged for fighting on top of its own logistical tail and couldn’t even control Texas, much less all of America.

Yeah, AR-15s armed citizenry can very easily dominate a US military effort against the citizenry.

I remember 2 morons with a Caprice Classic and an AR15 and a magazine of ammo paralyzing several states in the DC area for several weeks too.

But they love trying to explain to us how helpless we are if the government comes after Americans.

Dorner would probably still be out there if he hadn’t published his stupid manifesto. LA would likely be under something resembling martial law. Very poorly managed martial law. More Dorners being generated as a result.

The ONLY purpose of the 2nd Amendment is defend against governmental tyranny.

And for those who don't believe this could ever happen in the USA. They don't know their history, especially The Battle of Athens in 1946.

In Athens Tennessee 1946, returning WWII veterans took up arms against the corrupt and brutal Democrat political machine of Paul Cantrell.

Cantrell thugs had regularly robbed, beat and even killed returning veterans. When Cantrell tried to steal the election by rigging the ballots, the veterans brought up M1917 rifles and Thompson Submachine guns. They surrounded and took under fire the County Jail where Cantrell had taken the ballot boxes.

After the veterans accurate fire and dynamiting of the front door, the thugs surrendered, the ballots were secured and later accurately counted.

The whole Leftist argument that: “You’re massively outgunned by the military anyway so you might as well give up your guns and render yourself completely defenseless” makes no sense at all.

Firstly, the US military is not composed of unthinking automatons who will all just follow whatever oppressive orders they are given. In many countries, orders to fire on their own people have caused a lot of the military to turn on the government instead.

Secondly knowing the Founding Fathers intended an armed citizenry to serve as a deterrent to the tyrannical impulses of government if you believe the weapons currently in private hands not sufficient to accomplish this goal, the solution is not to disarm the citizenry but instead to put MORE and DEADLIER weapons in private hands. (This is the really fun part - the looks of horror on Leftist’s faces are priceless). I’d just like to point out that fully automatic weapons, land mines, RPGs, hand grenades, mortars and armed drones are well within the budgets of many private citizens.......

Quite a few cops would be on “our” side. As gun bans States point out though, more than enough will see confiscation laws as “just following orders”.

Still, better to go after those giving unConstitutional orders for confiscation...
