The Brooklyn Museum in New York City has sparked outrage among members of the black community after it selected a white woman to curate its African art exhibit. The museum announced Monday that it tapped Kristen Windmuller-Luna, 31, to be in charge of the museums African art collection.
Luna earned a Ph.D. from Princeton University in African art history, worked for the Metropolitan Museum of Art as an educator responsible for adult and college gallery tours of the museums African galleries, and lectures at Columbia University.
But despite the womans impressive credentials, social media users have been criticizing the museum for hiring her because she is not a person of color.

Seriously, @brooklynmuseum? There goes the neighborhood for good, Philadelphia journalist Ernest Owens wrote on Twitter.
People from the African Diaspora are frustrated w/white people being gatekeepers of our narrative, Kimberly Seldon tweeted.
The Brooklyn Museum defended its choice to hire Luna because of her track record as an innovator in the field and said that it was committed to equity.
Kristen is the perfect choice to build upon the Brooklyn Museums track record as an innovator in the collection and exhibition of the arts of Africa, Jennifer Chi, the museums chief curator, said in a statement to the New York Post.
After receiving lots of backlash over its hiring decision, the museum posted an updated statement stating that it was monitoring the debate over the recent hires and it is committed to equity in the workplace.
Were listening and we hear you. As we think about ways to engage in this conversation with the care it deserves, we want to assure you that you can count on us, as ever, to continue working deeply on equity within our institution and beyond, the museum tweeted.

The Brooklyn Museum has a very nice collection of African art, from 2,000 to 5,000 years old, produced in the lower Nile Valley (north of the Tropic of Cancer).
And the first one who has ever actually gotten a job in their field.
she's wasting her time in Brooklyn. probably wants to get hipster 'street cred' and then go for tenure at Wellsely
Imagine attending Princeton University but obtaining a PhD. in African art? Isn’t that the epitome of privilege. The irony.
LOL!
New curator needs to get a tan and get her hair curled.
What these dear little naive liberals don’t understand is, that as soon as their idiocy is no longer useful, they get “Trotskyed”.
the only solution is to hire Rachel Dolezal from the Portland NAACP!
One more leftist found out there are consequences for having white skin. Academic qualifications are meaningless in this instance.
Leontyne Price, a large black opera singer who has a voice that could make a bishop kick in a stained glass window, played a Japanese woman in Madame Butterfly singing in Italian. Nobody objected and it was beautiful!
Is that supposed to be some sort of Teletubby with that iPad on its gut?
Modern and post-modern art ... a good enough reason to like crafts rather than art.
I’m sure some would be upset with white people even looking at African art.
The ultimate fate of Useful Idiots. This us gonna prove especially true if the Left keeps hauling water for the likes of the Muslim Brotherhood.
I expect the Obama’s to jump on this band wagon.
They need that black expert that started Kwanzai.
Indeed.
The “Night of the Long Knives” ain’t just a Cooking Show on the Food Channel, ya know.
That's 'cause the curator at MFA is obviously a racist is hiding all the good stuff.
