Merriam-Webster Changes Definition Of 'Assault Rifle' After Parkland
The Federalist ^ | 03/31/18 | Bre Payton

Soon after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary changed its definition of “assault rifle.”

The entry for “assault rifle,” which was updated March 31, 2018, reads as follows:

noun: any of various intermediate-range, magazine-fed military rifles (such as the AK-47) that can be set for automatic or semiautomatic fire; also : a rifle that resembles a military assault rifle but is designed to allow only semiautomatic fire

After 17 people were shot and killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February, activists have been using the tragic events to make the sale of so-called “assault weapons” illegal.

An Internet archive search shows the Merriam-Webster entry for “assault rifle” appears to be different now than it was before the shooting. A cached version of the same entry from June 13, 2016 has this definition:

noun: any of various automatic or semiautomatic rifles with large capacity magazines designed for military use

“Assault weapon” and “assault rifles” are malleable terms often used in public discourse to scare people. After all, all guns are designed to “assault” something. The usual proper use of this term is to describe fully automatic machine-gun-style weapons, which in the United States have been banned from civilian use for years. Notice that the Merriam-Webster change stretches this definition to include anything that looks like such a gun regardless of whether it shoots like one.

Yet media and politicians often use this term inaccurately, as doing so furthers their desire of getting Americans to support gun-control policies. As Sean Davis pointed out on our pages last year, when the United States had a federal “assault weapons” ban, lawmakers defined the term cosmetically instead of by function and, contra Merriam-Webster, had nothing to do with a military-esque design (whatever that means):

Bingo. But the eggheads that buy the liberal propaganda don’t know that.

“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, “it means what I choose it to mean, neither more nor less.”
“The question is,” said Alice, “whether you CAN make words mean so many different things.”
“The question is”, said Humpty Dumpty, “which is to be master – that’s all.”

Lewis Caroll

Nothing new under the sun.

The Left's new strategy:

It's so much easier to simply "amend" the definition of the words of the Constitution than to amend the Constitution itself.

Here’s the definition of intermediate range cartridge.

An intermediate cartridge is a rifle/carbine cartridge that is less powerful than typical full-power battle rifle cartridges...

Apparently they don’t consider .308 so called “assault rifle ammunition.

So, M1A variants, FAL variants, HK 91 variants, and similar others are OK.
Liberals don’t think things out very well. From their core beliefs and the way they want to control everyone from cradle to grave. And that’s one of their big problems.

Well, strictly speaking, those are battle rifles. :-)

My buds and I had purchased some Beretta pistols at the NATO exchange outside of Naples and when we got back to the states in late ‘68, we were not allowed to take them out of the ships armory due the the rfk assassination/gca68 pending. They were eventually released to us but not for a while and I had already transferred to a different duty location. Knee jerk pointless legislation yet again.

If they are going to define two word phrases (assault rifle), rather than stick to individual words, they’re going to create a huge dictionary.

In the 50s Marx Toys put out a set of spring action pellet guns based on the paratrooper carbine and the M1911. Each was magazine loaded. The 1911 was full size, dull black and a dead ringer for the real thing. One day while plsying “guns” with my friends an NYPD cop from the 13th Pct was on the beat. He saw me, came over, and took the 1911. He was examining it and pushed the mag release. I thought he go in his pants as the pellet mag fell out. About 6 months later the toy was outlawed in NYC as tgey had been used in stickups. Marx responded by using different color schemes. Camo for Marines, white for MPs.

Assault Rifle = What you call a Rifle after someone hits you over the head with it.

Had to explain to a friend that an AK-47 wasn’t as potent as a 30.06 when she said an AK was a assault rifle 0 she finally grasped that what a gun looks like has nothing to do with potency.

The 86 law does not preclude sale or transfer, it makes it illegal to manufacture a full auto for civilian sale.

“a one round per pull AR type Airsoft is now an assault rifle.”.....

Next thing we know ANY gun that uses a cartridge or is loaded from the muzzle will be banned by definition.

The liberals have driven this country stark raving insane and are out of control.

If the Rats get the Congress we will see an assault weapons ban

They'll need a president to sign it into law, and barring that, they'll need the votes to over-ride a veto.

Even if the Dems somehow retake the House in the midterms, they won't get another AWB, and they know it.

At this time (and for the foreseeable future), all they can do is demagogue the issue. Americans, including a growing number of Dem voters, will not give up their guns or their 2nd Amendment rights.
