The Afrin Liberation Congress, held under Turkey's auspices following the capture of the region of Afrin in Syria by Turkish and Free Syrian Army forces, has announced that the region will be governed as part of the Turkish province of Antakya, independent news site T24 said.

The region will also establish a 450-person police force, the congress decided, and a governor and local governor will be appointed by Turkey’s central government.

Around 100 individuals from the region took part in the congress in the Turkish city of Gaziantep, and elected a 35-person assembly made up of 24 Kurds, eight Arabs, one Alawite, one Yezidi and one Turkmen, spokesperson Hasan Shindi said.

However, according to international law, the province must continue to follow Syrian law as it remains legally part of Syria.

And many young Afrin women are kidnapped, raped, disappeared, and sold as sex slaves. But Turkey is in charge, what could possibly go wrong?

Turkey annexes Afrin. I guess this is just another form of NATO expansion.

Wow.

...elected a 35-person assembly made up of 24 Kurds... Ethnic Turks loathe Kurds, surprised at the "diversity" of the assembly. But yeah, what possibly could go wrong?

I have a nagging sense that the struggle for Afrin is not over.

I am surprised. I thought Turkey would just kill them all like they did the Armenians (1.5 million.) Maybe they thought this would be cheaper. John Bolton understands the situation so mwybe he can advise Trump to dump Tourkry from NATO. That experiment didn’t work.

This robbery will never be forgotten, but at least the Kurds have a place they can call their own, for a time.

The Armenians were just one of the last victims (and maybe the most numerous) but the Turks had a long history of enslaving and killing people. Erdogan is just getting back to their roots.

I wonder which version of Islam will be favored in this province--Afrin Liberation Theology?

I am sensing American treason towards the Kurds, with Turkey, Russia and Assad having given their mutual agreement to Turkey’s annexation of a northern swath of Syria, leaving Syria’s Kurds in the hands of Erdogan, and all of it given a wink and & nod by Trump.

Meanwhile we are going to keep throwing away our lives and treasure on helping the child-rapist Afghans.

Türkiye was a vital piece of the bulwark facing the USSR. When the USSR went away Türkiye should have been gıven a nice party then bid adieu.

In hindsight, maybe we should have just let the USSR have Turkey.

That would have forced Trump’s hand.

None of this is surprising....Turkey has made it's intentions known for sometime in what they want..by force of necessary.

As for the kidnapping and rape of girls and women....that is unfortunately the muslim mindset of conflicts in the middle east who operate with medieval islamic mindsets.

No. That would have given the USSR an open road to flood through the Middle East. I don’t think Israel could have survived that.

Antakya is the capital of Hatay province- which Turkey stole from Syria in 1939...

How appropriate!

Astute observation. They were a necessary evil when NATO was formed, but never contributed mucu, except for allowing our missiles and the bases. Now, we can launch missiles from anywhere in the world and there is less need for Incirclik...
