People are uncomfortable with the term privileged.
Several readers took offense recently when I differentiated between privileged youths and underprivileged youths in a column about the March for Our Lives.
Categorizing and generalizing of this type are just veiled forms of discrimination and/or racism, one man wrote.
Id like to take this opportunity to set the record straight.
If you are a white person in America, you were born privileged. Thats just a fact.
Its nothing to be ashamed of. Its not anybodys fault. Theres no need to get defensive about it.
The best thing to do is just acknowledge it.
Being privileged does not necessarily mean that you have a perfect life. It does not mean that you come from wealth or that you always obtain everything you want or deserve.
It doesnt give you a pass to be lazy and shiftless. It doesnt automatically guarantee you success. White skin no more relieves you of taking responsibility for your life, working hard and thinking smart than it does for people with dark skin.
It just means that you have a head start over the rest of us.
White privilege means that you were born with an inherent advantage over every other race of people. The whiteness of your skin alone allows you to leave the starting gate quicker and to run the race with fewer obstacles. White skin comes with certain other perks, too, many of which are taken for granted.
American culture itself is white-centric. For example, as an African-American woman, I can rarely find makeup that matches my exact skin tone. Though cosmetics companies have gotten a lot better at adding more diverse colors to their lines, I still most often have to buy two shades and mix them together to get a match.

“Whites” could disappear from the face of the earth tonight and people like this woman will be complaining about the “legacy of white racism” long decades later. In the meantime, some other group will be singled out to be the scape-goat for “make-up” and other petty problems that keep them awake at night.
White males are under-represented in the NBA as well.
What are we going to do about that?
If you are a white person in America, you were born privileged. Thats just a fact.
Your opinion is not fact.
What about people who are born smarter?
People who are born more attractive?
People born to two parents?
People born taller?
People born healthy vs disabled?
People born in a certain part of the country that has better opportunities?
What about these privileges? Why aren’t we forced to “acknowledge” these?
Why? Because they have nothing to do with skin color and it is not easy to separate people into groups and scapegoat some.
I imagine I’d find it hard to obtain light makeup in certain African nations, where black privilege is rampant.
But as for white privilege and a white’centric America? Welcome to Western Civilization - made up of, shocker, white people - a world minority. If you don’t like it, there is a whole big world out there to choose from.
Any privilege I have comes from God. Take it up with Him.
Years ago I applied for an IT job at a large city in Southern California.
100’s of people took the exam. Before I even started they had a sign posted. +10 Points for being ex-military, +10 for being a woman, +10 for being a minority. So I was already 30 points down before even starting the test.
3 years later they called me in for an interview and told me that I had actually scored the highest in the group but that they had to hire others first. Since those people had 3 years of experience they would be my boss and how did I feel about that.
I couldn’t hide the body language so I didn’t get the job.
At the time I really needed the job as the job I was working at had an unethical owner.
LOL! Long ago they had little license plates with common names kids could put on their bikes. None made for the cowboy names dad gave my brothers and I.
Does anyone know if there is any longitudinal study that controls for everything except race to determine if there is a statistical difference in outcomes between the races? For instance, if a black child and white child each had parents that were married when the child was born, kept an intact family through that child’s upbringing, were middle class socio-economically, were religious, etc., is there a statistical difference in the “success” of each of those children?
There must be a way to use data to either prove or disprove this notion of “privilege”. Otherwise, everything is anecdotal. I can’t get make-up so there’s white privilege.
I call bs and I wont buy it.
In college, there were many black guys at the start of my tech major, zero at the end. Once the tech classes started needing real studying, they faded out. Truth.
How many skilled, experienced, talented white people did this harpy pull black priveledge over for her job, hmm?
Blacks excuses no longer work. Their base lies are widely known. They are losing out now to Hispanics and others that learn and work. They cant tolerate real Africans from Africa.
I couldnt hide the body language so I didnt get the job.
Pushed your glasses up with your middle finger? #8^)
I'm NOT uncomfortable with the term 'privileged' because it represents our 'racial reputation' - an EARNED reputation for being honest, hard working, and decent. Our cultural legacy is democracy and the willingness to right wrongs like slavery.
On a more personal level, if your car breaks down in the middle of the night - and you're of 'any' race - would you rather the breakdown happen in a 'white' neighborhood or 'black neighborhood'. Answer truthfully and you'll understand one of our advantages... 'Racial Reputation' - - period. What's your choice Dahleen Glanton? Which neighborhood?
Oh, and it's an 'advantage' that disappears the second a white person acts like a two bit criminal...

We're NOT talking about who has the most 'stuff' tbw2 - - we're talking cultural privilege - which has almost nothing to do with how much 'cash' people have on hand'...Our reputation's NOT based on wealth.
Bull shi...er...bull Obama.
Shove it, journalist.
Shove it deep.
Shove it often.
And keep on shoving.
We no longer even pretend to care.
Yep. I mean how come there don’t be no oppotrefees on them there chains? Know what I’m saying?
“For example, as an African-American woman, I can rarely find makeup that matches my exact skin tone.
But you CAN find it. Maybe you should take note of WHERE you found it or see if you can order it online. But that would take effort. Effort that is apparently better spent blaming innocent white people for the low performance of blacks in just about everything but sports and entertainment.
“They dont want a color blind society, they want something completely different.”
The slave dreams not of freedom. The slave dreams of becoming a master.
A damned bigot. Let’s call it.
They want to repeal the Second Amendment and make us the equivalent of white South Africans, who can be murdered raped and butchered at any time on a whim.
