Trump privately presses for military to pay for border wall
Washington Post ^ | 03/27/2018 | Josh Dawsey and Mike DeBonis

President Trump frequently said Mexico would pay for a wall along the southern border as he sought the presidency in 2016. Now, he is privately pushing the U.S. military to fund construction of his signature project.

Trump, who told advisers he was spurned in a large spending bill last week when lawmakers only appropriated $1.6 billion for the border wall, has begun suggesting the Pentagon could fund the sprawling construction, citing a “national security” risk.

After floating the notion to several advisers last week, he told Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) that the military should pay for the wall in a meeting last Wednesday in the White House residence, according to three people familiar with the meeting. Ryan offered little reaction to the notion, these people said, but senior Capitol Hill officials later said it was an unlikely prospect.

Extremely simple answer. Mexico will lose $40-50 Billion trade surplus with US. With resulting loss of manufacturing jobs in Mexico, and transferring those jobs to US. Manufacturing is #1 wealth creator.

Rush explained the loopholes that would allow Pres. Trump to use part of the Pentagon budget to build the wall. Didja know the Pentagon financial wizards specifically said that no money from their budget could be used to build the wall? They were stymied by another financial committee...

Gack! If the swamp was drained, we could see all this BS for ourselves! I really hate having to have stuff drawn out for me.

It is virtually self evident--simply read the Preamble, the stated purpose for our even having the Constitution--that defending our communities to or for the stated Constitutional purpose, requires us to be able to stop those who do not respect our heritage, from entering against our will.

As usual, the President is apt and to the essential point.

Trump never pre-announces his exact plans.

"A senior Pentagon official told the newspaper that any reallocation of 2018 military funding for the border wall would require an act of Congress."

Yea, not gonna happen.

The wall is never going to be built now & I tried to tell friends not to get their hopes up with this fake military loophole. Trump should've never signed that awful, awful bill.

“Mexico will pay for the wall” was blowing smoke big time.

Not meant as a personal attack on you, but anyone who thought Mexico was going to directly pay for the wall is an idiot. Trump has other avenues to extract funds from Mexico via treaties, tariffs, deportations, etc. With Mexico's $63B trade surplus and tens of millions of illegal aliens drawing entitlements and services, it's a zero sum game that we have been losing.

That is not "Mexico paying for the wall".

So define "Mexico paying for the wall". What, is the Mexican president going to sit down and write a check?

Extremely simple answer.

H.L. Menken once said that for every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.

Mexico will lose $40-50 Billion trade surplus with US

Cut off trade with Mexico and we also lose all those jobs created by making the stuff we sent to them.

With resulting loss of manufacturing jobs in Mexico, and transferring those jobs to US. Manufacturing is #1 wealth creator.

More likely the jobs will remain there and the cost of the tariff will be passed on to U.S. consumers. Either way - manufacture there or manufacture here - the costs to U.S. consumers go up.

Just a few days ago, many here were saying those of us worried about the Omnibus bill were crazy because the wall would be built with military money and all those other crazy expenditures would be stopped by the President. OK, I guess we are at Strike 1 for now.

Haven’t seen a treaty that pays for the wall. Tariffs don’t pay for the wall (the American consumer does). Deportations don’t pay for the wall.

Nope, so far, a nothing burger.

How can the military say NO to the President? This is not the same military I served in.

That's exactly what Trump was asked ore than once during the campaign. His answer was always tariffs and the like. But tariffs don't make Mexico pay for the wall. Tariffs make the American consumer pay for the wall.

I have no problem with the wall, but please, this was a load of b/s.

OK, so you won't be satisfied until the president of Mexico sits down and writes a nice big check to Uncle Sam - perhaps with an apology note.

Got it.

Ay yi yi...

How often does the President meet with Mattis and/or the Cabinet?? Reading the press clippings, it seems he seldom met with Tillerson. - just curious.

Trump ought to tell Mattis to get that wall built and no backtalk. If he can’t command the military, he’s just a big ole girl.

Again, haven’t seen a treaty that pays for the wall. Tariffs don’t pay for the wall (the American consumer does). Deportations don’t pay for the wall.

Lots of people have posted on this thread how it REALLY works, but you're obviously incapable of understanding, so you're not interested in their explanations.

Ta ta! Have fun in your little world!
