Rarely in my lifetime have I seen the type of civic engagement schoolchildren and their supporters demonstrated in Washington and other major cities throughout the country this past Saturday. These demonstrations demand our respect. They reveal the broad public support for legislation to minimize the risk of mass killings of schoolchildren and others in our society.
That support is a clear sign to lawmakers to enact legislation prohibiting civilian ownership of semiautomatic weapons, increasing the minimum age to buy a gun from 18 to 21 years old, and establishing more comprehensive background checks on all purchasers of firearms. But the demonstrators should seek more effective and more lasting reform. They should demand a repeal of the Second Amendment.
Concern that a national standing army might pose a threat to the security of the separate states led to the adoption of that amendment, which provides that a well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. Today that concern is a relic of the 18th century.
For over 200 years after the adoption of the Second Amendment, it was uniformly understood as not placing any limit on either federal or state authority to enact gun control legislation. In 1939 the Supreme Court unanimously held that Congress could prohibit the possession of a sawed-off shotgun because that weapon had no reasonable relation to the preservation or efficiency of a well regulated militia.
During the years when Warren Burger was our chief justice, from 1969 to 1986, no judge, federal or state, as far as I am aware, expressed any doubt as to the limited coverage of that amendment.

All because cowardly cops did nothing while children were being shot.
“......civic engagement schoolchildren and their supporters”............
That statement left out some important words such as “Brainwashed”, “Air Headed”, “Communist”, “Leftist”, and a host of other words.
I dunno .....
“The most amazing part of this article is that Stevens is still alive.”

Keep talking you Leftist morons.
You all are talking the Dems right out of winning the House.
Notice that the anti gun hysterics correspond exactly with the recent improvement in the GOP position on the generic ballot?
The missed fact of the 2016 election is Guns won it for Trump. Dems lost Northern ME, MI, WI and just about lost MN for the 1st time since 1972.
Why? Because in OCt Hillary and her surrogates started talking about “Executive Orders on guns”.
All those areas have strong hunting tradition in traditional blue collar Democrat voting strongholds. Not a lot will penetrate the fog of knee jerk party loyalty in these areas but talking about taking sways gun rights will.
Randy weavers wife and son are unavailable for comment.
This was a staged protest with exaggerated turnout. They aren’t repealing anything.
This would make a great billboard in Montana and Missouri. I’d bet my house the cheap labor express GOP donors can’t be bothered to attack the Dems with this. They’d much rather punish POTUS for no amnesty by working against him on The Hill.
Angry young man

Yes, exactly. If a GOPer said something this outrageous the Soros crowd would be on it immediately like white on rice. I was amazed last year to see how much money the Dems spent in South Carolina and Georgia on ads to attack the GOP with no election in sight! Dems never stop fighting it seems.
Too bad the lazy and corrupt GOP can’t be bothered to fight for us.
smarmy know-it-all ping
He so reminds me of Cindy Sheehag, who was also used by the media and then spit out. The only difference is that Cindy had a reason to protest the was - whether she was right or wrong is beside the issue.
“Today that concern is a relic of the 18th century.”
That way of thinking is exactly why we need the Second amendment.

At 97....He’s lost his wits...or maybe never really had them. Wonder who wrote this for him.
This is really the only way that should be allowed. All laws infringing upon the 2nd amendment should be invalidated by the US Supreme Court and all courts. Then, if anyone wants to change the constitution, the 2nd amendment, propose that change in their state house, and get the constitutionally required agreement of states to make the change. Until then, keep the laws and hands off our guns.
