Video from the Georgian ski resort of Gaudari showed terrified skiers jumping or falling from the chairlift as it travelled backwards during Friday's incident.

Must have been built by the same people who built the FIU Bridge.
Does the other Georgia even have a ski lift?
AFAIK, The closest ski lifts to GA/USA are in the NC mountains.
There’s a couple of podunk tow-rope slopes with a couple of miles of the GA state line in NC and AL.
I thought it funny they had to explain.
But with the state of public education in the US, I can see why.
I was wondering the same thing.

What does public education have to do with it?
If they can ski in Hawaii why isn’t it remotely possible that there is skiing in Georgia?
.
Seems that a failsafe should have kicked in, if nothing else something that sensed the cable was moving too fast and applied a brake. Maybe built by Comrade Lowbiddersky.
A big diff in elevation, maybe?
Actually, yes it does although the ski resort went under years ago. There are plenty of ski slopes in the southern Appalachians. The one in Gatlinburg has an artificial polyester base to help with patchiness during warm spells. The larger, higher elevation ones in NC can have a pretty impressive base in good years. Natural snowfall is rarely sufficient though, they all rely on snowmaking.

Of course, but a snarky remark about public schools was not necessary, people are human and may not be familiar with some areas.

A lift when loaded has most of the weight being pulled uphill. If there’s a failure, there is a mechanical brake that clamps the cable to prevent reverse runaway, seen here. These are tested daily here in the USA. Additionally, some lifts have a set of spider gears (think of your car differential) that travel round and round when the bullwheel is going the right direction, with no effect. But if the bullwheel reverses in a failure, they spill and jam the works as a secondary safety. I knew a machinist who made those gears, and I thought it was a damn clever idea. You learn the neatest things sitting in the bar!
The lift was built by Poma Doppelmeyer, the largest manufacturer of cableways in the world. I’m suspecting a maintenance issue will be found. There are at least 3 methods to prevent rollback on a detachable chairlift such as this. Multiple failures or manual bypasses had to happen.
"Ski lift operated by United Airlines." LOL.
Russian language obscenity warning at 0:15.
Yeah, the skiing in Atlanta is terrible this time of year. ;-)
