The woman died of her injuries at a hospital and her name was not made public.
In a statement Monday, Uber said: Our hearts go out to the victims family. Were fully cooperating with @TempePolice and local authorities as they investigate this incident.
Dara Khosrowshahi. the companys CEO, tweeted this statement: Some incredibly sad news out of Arizona. Were thinking of the victims family as we work with local law enforcement to understand what happened

Uber has been testing the self-driving vehicles in Tempe and Phoenix for months. Late last month, California announced new rules that will allow driverless cars to be tested in California for the first time without a person behind a steering wheel.

I heard there was a “back up” driver in the vehicle. Apparently no “go forward” driver. Heard uber apologized and sent condolences. They better plan on sending a YUGE check before it’s all said and done.
Who couldnt see this disaster coming.
Driverless cars is a stupid millinneal pipe dream.
Killing potential customers is not good for business. This does however give them a good slogan. “If you take an Uber, one won’t run over you.”
So who is held liable when a driverless car kills someone? The owner, the “backup driver”, or the manufacturer? Or is an apology all the victim’s family going to get?
Terrorists are probably salivating over the possibilities.
millinneal?
And automobiles with the human driver has never killed anyone!
They get a text or a Tweet.
Sort of like the Accelerated bridge that just fell onto the street killing people after being up for less than a week in Florida.
Do driverless cars have constitutional rights? Can they be jailed without due process? Science fiction stuff, now becoming reality.
In the car’s defense, it couldn’t see the pedestrian. /s
Sure is. It is the bridges fault, not the people behind it. As with guns, not the people misusing them. This Uber car had an attendant behind the wheel monitoring the driverless car, what was he doing, daydreaming or fondling himself? Someone, a human(s), need to be held accountable for killing a person.
wanna bet the human was at fault?
if someone runs illegally into a crowded street.. yep, a computer will hit them too!

Have they explained the mangled bicycle yet?
“hey better plan on sending a YUGE check before its all said and done.”
My understanding of the facts is the lady ran out into traffic in the middle of the road and got herself killed. The human driver AND the car couldn’t save her from her own stupidity.

Has the investigation to determine fault been completed already?
I suppose the multiple pedestrians killed everyday by human drivers is a disaster, too.

The most I’ve seen is she was outside a crosswalk, and in Arizona that means she did not have the right of way. Even if she did, she still can’t dart out in front of a car.
