PITTSBURGH, Pa. –A former resident of Ozone Park, New York, has been sentenced in federal court to 87 months in prison and three years of supervised release on his conviction of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, United States Attorney Scott W. Brady announced today.

United States District Judge David S. Cercone imposed the sentence on Abiodun Bakre, who was in the United States illegally during the period in which he committed the offenses. In imposing sentence, Judge Cercone noted that the wire fraud conspiracy in which Bakre participated was the largest financial fraud case the Court had presided over in more than 30 years on the bench. All told, the fraud involved over $69 million in attempted losses, with more than $20 million in fraudulently obtained federal tax refunds actually being sent out by the Internal Revenue Service. The Court also noted that over 11,000 people "were the victims of this nefarious activity."

This scheme was based on identity theft, so the perp was using multiple SS numbers. But still he could never use 11,000 mailing addresses.

In any case the length of prison sentence seems awfully short in view of the enormity of crime.

That was my point, though. How can someone use multiple ss numbers? Wouldn’t the Social Security Administration be notified?

Kent Hovind served 12 years for what the Tax Court said was a few hundred thousand in “unpaid” taxes and “structuring”.

Hovind insisted that people that worked for him were 1099 contractors. The IRS said that they were “employees” and that he should have been withholding their taxes.

On a couple occasions, he deposited or withdrew a little over $9K. He said those were receipts for the week or withdrawals for op expenses. The IRS said it was “structuring”.

Hovind served 12 years in medium security federal pen.

Meanwhile, the illegal alien murderer of Kate Steinle is not only free, but is suing the government for “malicious prosecution.”

Meanwhile this illegal gets 7 years for multiple millions of fraud.

Howie Carr says that if he ever does anything illegal, he just wants to be treated like an illegal alien.

So the sentencing requires him to stay here and be supervised for 3 years after he serves his sentence? Whaaaaa?

“”That was my point, though. How can someone use multiple ss numbers? Wouldn’t the Social Security Administration be notified?””

If he filed 11,000 tax returns, it means he stole 11,000 ID’s... There would be duplicate SS numbers if the real owners of the numbers filed their own returns but maybe he stole the ID from other “illegals” who didn’t file returns - HA! Who knows? I don’t know if the IRS would notify SS of the duplication of numbers. I would think SS would get involved only when employers file quarterly payroll tax returns and numbers on those don’t match up with names...

Kind of convoluted, right? See, none of us would make good crooks because we think through all the angles and figure it’s easier to play it straight and crooks don’t..

7 years seems light for 11,000 counts of identity fraud and theft.

If you stole identity of your cousin, and applied for a refund, IRS has no way to know it is you and not your cousin applying for the refund. IRS does not require fingerprints or photo in conjunction with a refund.

There should be MANDATORY MINIMUM 10 years in jail and another 10 years probation for government fraud of any kind INCLUDING VOTER FRAUD.

I guess I just assumed that the IRS and the Social Security Administration have a checks and balances type of relationship.

“How smart is our IRS in sending 11,000 fraudulent refund checks to a single individual???”

The Maryland Voter Registration Office sent hundreds of Voter ID Cards to the same addresses back when Ellen Sauerbrey (R) was running for Governor in 1994. Anything is possible where Democrats are involved.

(Out of 1.4 million ballots cast, she lost by less than 6000 votes at the last minute.)

I would wonder if, about the time of the arrest, someone in the IRS went on a long vacation to a country without an extradition treaty with the U.S.

An English/Irish cleric and writer of satire through the first half of the 1700s. You probably know “Gulliver’s Travels”, and may know “a Modest Proposal”. He’s distinct and prominent enough that his style of satire is referred to as “Swiftian”.

My tag line isn’t so much a reference to him, as to the logic of the quotation itself.

There are millions of illegals doing this already. Prosecute them. Send a message. If we had done this in the past, Hillary would had had e few million fewer votes.

He’ll be out in less than 5 years and he’ll be back across the border before his probation officer gets his release papers.

Yes, I know Gulliver’s Travels...thanks. I was going to comment on your comment; then I caught your tagline & his name...distracted.

I agree that the punishment does NOT fit the crime, when it comes to identity theft. Identity Theft is the fastest growing crime in nation right now. People who steal other peoples identities are adding billions to cost of crime/citizens debt, as law enforcement groups are constantly searching for those people....and he gets almost nothing for his crimes.

Then add Obama had 500,000 fugitives removed from database, which prevents FBI searching for them, if they aren’t there... Image the types of crimes involved, and all criminals needing money! The IRS is antiquated in it’s approach to the white collar crimes, that are rising by stealing identities...endless! How does your state do with identity theft cases?

AND credit card companies fill mailboxes with invitations to get a new card for those pre approved....that should be a crime to send that stuff. All the criminal needs is another piece of mail in the mailbox, that gives phone number, account number of another bill, or more personal information...sic.

I apologize, I got carried away, it’s something that is so unnecessary, if IRS just cross checked info in computer system!

Even the title says “ILLEGAL” and no, the article itself does not say he’s Nigerian. What’s going on? You got mixed up?
