Assad films himself driving to Ghouta to demonstrate victory

BEIRUT (Reuters) - President Bashar al-Assad flaunted government advances in Syria's seven-year war by filming himself driving to meet frontline soldiers near Damascus, making a video of the journey from the city center into areas recently recaptured.

"The road is open... everything is running now in the city and in Syria," he said in the video, describing a road that had previously been cut by sniper fire and saying it was now easier to travel around the country.

The video, released overnight after a trip on Sunday, showed Assad in sunglasses at the wheel of his Honda car, speaking about the government's increasing strength as peaceful scenery behind him gave way to battle-scarred concrete.

Assad is nothing if not a survivor. One double-tough SOB. Everyone was gunning for him. Some still are. Yet he walks among his soldiers as if the war is over. With a Turkish Flag flying over Afrin and Kurds on the move, I doubt if the war is over.

He’s also a murderous thug.
Israel will deal with him soon enough.

That’s the bad part about the Syrian Conflict.

There are really no good guys.

On one side you have ISIS and Al Qaeda.

On the other side is Hezbollah, the Iranians and the Russians.

Assad (in prior years) has pledged the safety of Christians still remaining in Syria - but I gotta think that Hezbollah and the Iranians have different ideas.

I fear for the safety of Israel because Hezbollah has built up such a supply of rockets and weaponry in the parts of Syria closest to Israel.

I would not have a problem taking in his old lady as a refugee if he gets whacked.

Come to think of it, I’ve always been a humanitarian. When I was 17 I wanted my parents to take in a 16 year old orphaned Korean girl.

I’m not sure there’s anyone in the Middle East who is not a “muderous thug”, Israel included.

7 years to finally take the suburbs of Damascus? The Syrian and Russian military have such might.

Deal with him, and see him replaced by whom? Israel has (allegedly) maintained aid stations to help keep Al Nusra and alugned fighters in the fight -- it appears that Israel wants Syria to be an unstable bloodbath to keep these elements focused on killing each other instead of on Israel. But I think they'd prefer, when this finally ends, to have Assad running the show. A depleted, exhausted Syria run by the devil they know, rather than one they don't know.

And that aside, Syrian Christians overwhelmingly support Assad. There's a reason for that, and it counts for a lot in my book. He may well be an evil character, but he keeps worse elements in check.

Lebanon’s miserable stories involve Palestinian terrorists, Israel, European liberals, Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia......

The way it’s going to be dealt with, there won’t be a Syria ever again.

A Pre-emptive war is about to happen, this year more than likely.

Israel is not going to stand by and allow Iran, Turkey, Hezbollah, and Syria level threats against them. What happened in 1967 will happen again. They won’t repeat the mistake of 1973.

There’s going to be more than a handful of folks literally dying of heart attacks because of what will transpire in the Middle East soon.

He protects Syrian Christians, Assyrians, Armenians, Alawites, Druze & a host of other minorities.

He resists the NeoCons’ Wahhabi Jihadist terrorist proxies including ISIS, Al Qaeda, Jaish al Islam, etc.

Foreign opinion polls show he has >70% support of the Syrian population.

Yeah, but on the bright side, we were able to save a lot of the Muslim Brotherhood that the Assads were killing.

They're currently building a Mosque where the World Trade Center towers were standing.
