I move to California in 1973. The state sales tax was 3%! Santa Clara County charged an extra 0.25% “BART Tax” to bring BART to the county. That extra 1/4 percent was collected for decades. Did BART ever arrive? Of course not. Where did the collected money go? Anybody’s guess.
45 years later, our state sales tax is very close to 10%.
People have been absolutely RAPED by slowly and steadily increased sales taxes. They do it slow slowly the frogs never notice. An eighth of a point for this, a quarter point for that, a full half percent for this special thing. Year after year after year after year. The argument is always the same — “it’s only another 1/4 percent. It’ll cost the average schlub only $X per year. Would you deny XYZ for only $X per year?” Next thing you know, you’re paying ten cents on every dollar spent.

...Jersey is Barstow without the great weather...
Uhhh, I was stationed at Barstow 70 - 72 and I would not exactly say that the weather on that part of the high desert is all that great.
Heat, sandstorms, snakes, scorpions, ancient seashores, rocks, sand, a girl behind every tree (no trees), scrub and did I mention heat?
It was tolerable, fairly close to mountains and trees, and I met my wife there so there are bright points.
Still, great weather is a stretch.
You are right in saying New Jersey taken all together is less inviting than Barstow but don’t forget that Barstow is in another democrap run state that is failing, California.

exactly right. They don’t realize that in a democratic system they are the ones that caused the problem.

“Jersey is Barstow without the great weather.”
I am still trying to digest that. ???
To: Dennis M.
I just got his joke (hope it was a joke). NJ and Barstow are both crappy.
Barstow is bad enough but as I noted above that it is in dead, broke, and stupid California and NJ is definitely trying to catch up with them.
A better comparison for NJ weather and circumstances might be China Lake CA.

On those missing returns, the government collects 6.25% of nothing. Instead of the state coffers gaining the extra $106 million the politicians predicted, millionaires paid $100 million less in taxes than they did last year -- even at higher rates. I see the problem here they didn't raise the rate enough in the first place. ( What do you mean Static Analysis is a crock...)

Just wait for it-in a few years they will put a mandatory tracking chip in you and tax you for distances walked...If you drive a car, I'll tax the street,
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat.
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat,
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet.
Cause I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

IL is actually in a better situation. Larger with more manufacturing that is hard to move.
But still flat broke and stupid.

Chris Christie was term-limited. He could not run for a third term in 2017.
Phil Murphy is the new governor.

Hard to believe Chuck Barris designed that car/truck from a 1921 Olds Roadster.

The attraction is simple - a short commute from a nice house to a job on Wall Street that pays $500K.
Don’t have such a job? Then why are you hanging around?
To: freedumb2003
Yep, that thought occurred to me after I posted. Great point.

People forget that the tax payers really ARE on the hook for any debt their government incurs.
Long story short...in Flint, Michigan, in the late 90's, the tallest building in town, a 13-story former bank headquarters, became empty when the bank was merged. It fell into disrepair and became tax delinquent. A speculator bought it at auction for $500,000. He made no repairs, and a few years later streets in the area had to be closed when large chunks of concrete began falling from the upper floors.
The city took action and took the building by eminent domain. They paid the owner $500,000. "Time out!", he said, "you have me tax assessed at $7 million!" He sued, and the Michigan Supreme Court eventually ordered the City of Flint to pay him $7 million, which they did not have.
The pool of taxpayers, which had shrunken dramatically over that time, got a second property tax bill for the Genesee Towers Assessment to pay off that judgment. The building was finally imploded two years ago. Double your taxes for a pile of rubble.

NJ needs to be broken apart like most states. Liberals have essentially destroyed most of the 50. This country is still America but we are now a different type of country going into uncertain times.
BTW, NJ voters suck. I will be gone within a few years. Other states have a shore LOL.
