US President Donald Trump has sacked Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, replacing him with the director of the CIA, Mike Pompeo.

Thanking Mr Tillerson for his service on Twitter, Mr Trump said the new state secretary would do "a fantastic job".

Mr Tillerson, a former chief executive of ExxonMobil, was only appointed to the job just over a year ago.

The president also nominated Gina Haspel to become the first woman director of the CIA.

The Department of State said Mr Tillerson had not spoken to the president and was "unaware of the reason" for his firing.

Under Secretary Steve Goldstein said: "The Secretary had every intention of staying because of the critical progress made in national security."

“Why doesn’t Trump appoint people he can remain loyal to?”

You’ve got it a$$ backwards. The problem of loyalty is with the appointees. Tillerson was a first-class Liberal a$$hole! Glad he’s gone. Pompeo, OTOH is a loyalist who will clean house at the DOS and help Trump implement his foreign policy objectives. And yeah, I too am upset about the “revolving door,” Trump hasn’t chosen wisely in a number of his appointments and they are dragging his administration down. But on balance, Trump is doing an amazing job and he’s willing to admit his personnel mistakes and take corrective action.

Their both bosses! You can’t have someone on your team who thinks they would do a better job sitting in your chair!

There is no telling what prompted the firing. On that level of power, nothing is ever as it appears, or what Trump was reacting to.

“There are no Obama appointees left at the State Department. Haven’t been since a year ago January. “

You forgot the sarcasm tag. Either that or you’ve been asleep. Hope it’s the former.

Oh, this will be so gooooooodddddd. The dem caterwauling will drown out the imaginary Russian conspiracy when they figure out that Haspel oversaw quite a lot of extreme interrogation techniques. She is, evidently, a big fan of saving innocent American lives.

Then we can call them misogynists.

Not a surprise at all. The only surprise is that it took this long. Rex was saying a lot of stupid crap.

From day one he always struck me as someone who really didn't want to be there. I have no idea what possessed him to take the position in the first place.

Looks to me like Trump likes debate to a certain point. Anyone who disagrees with him doesn’t seem to be lasting long.

I’m wondering if this is related to Tillerson’s recent visit to Turkey and the mess in Efrin?

That’s a very fair question. And you’ll probably catch some flak here for asking it.

Because, at the time he appoints them, he is not aware that THEY are not going to be loyal to HIM (why does a certain useless Attorney General come to mind?). If they prove to be disloyal to him, there is no reason - nor would I want him - to remain loyal to THEM (of course, that begs the question of why a certain useless Attorney General still has HIS job).

“Why doesn’t Trump appoint people he can remain loyal to?”

How is he supposed to know beforehand how someone will execute a certain position? It’s only government that can afford to keep people who aren’t effective.

Trump isn’t charged with loyalty to staff positions.

Trump is all about results.

Results have been great, he can arrange and rearrange his staff all he wants.

Trump is loyal to this country unlike any president since Reagan
