Marine Corps Commandant: 'Less Than 30% of Young Men and Women' Qualified to Join Military

The United States Marine Corps Commandant told Congress on Wednesday that recruitment is "hard work," because so few people are qualified to fill the ranks.

But while recruitment is difficult, "This is a really good Marine Corps," General Robert B. Neller told the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense:

"So, I think we're all aware that, you know, in the nation, I mean, it's a strategic issue that less than 30 percent of the young men and women of our nation are qualified just to join the military, either because of physical, mental or moral issues. So now we're down to 30 percent and now we have to find those that have a propensity or are interested in doing this.

So, if I calculate this right, that means that 70% supposedly can't get into any branch of the military? Due to physical, mental or moral issues? Sounds about right. Even more reason for law abiding citizens to keep and bear arms eh?

More accurately, it means 70% would need waivers of some sort or another to enlist.

Uncle Sam hands waivers out generously when he needs to fill the ranks. I had a whole stack of them when I enlisted.

Guess we can call that the Failure Generation. What percentage of the competent 30% comes from the biggest cities in the nation? Inquiring minds want to know if we are dumping money into rat holes.

Works for me. We need only The Cream of the Crop in our Military. No slackers, no mental cases. No guys who want to be girls, etc.

MAGA!

I cannot WAIT until being in the Military is an awesome and respected career once again.

So glad I served when I did.

If it were easy, everyone would do it (theoretically), and we wouldn’t want that. Gives extra meaning to “The Few, The Proud.”

That’s why I said ‘supposedly’. Some way some how some of the 70% will still get in and end up getting care at the VA eventually and bumping us out of line. ;=)

This may just be a reflection of manpower needs not being particularly great which enables the service to be more selective in who they take.

And how many of those 30% even have any interest in joining the military? The dirty little secret here is that the U.S. military began accepting recruits who would have been deemed “physically, mentally or morally” unqualified a generation ago — and it’s simply because they can’t get enough normal people to join.

Time to mandate physical education again. Such curriculum can be done in flexible manners, able to accomodate disabled or morbidly obese. It’s okay if not every student can run 20 laps around the gym. They should be able to ‘trade’ X amount of Sit-Ups or Pull Ups for the same credit.

Maybe The Donald will get that going. More likely, he will appoint someone to head a fitness movement, because we all know our President likes his Big Macs and fries (as I do).
Plus, he’s over 70, so the fitness Czar should be delegated to someone.

Too bad Lindsay Vonn was such a #NeverTrumper.
She would be an ideal person to lead such a fitness movement. Oh, I just thought of another well known athlete
who mostly stays out of trouble; Tim Tebow!!!

The population of the US was 132 million in 1940.

Approx. 11% (16.5 million) of the population served in the Armed Forces during WW II.

That means we would need approx. 34 million in the Armed Forces under a similar situation today and we could not do it.

Of course technology today would cut that 33 million figure.

We have a voluntary enlistment military. They can afford to be picky with recruits. It works the same way in the private sector.

We want the best that America has to offer in people who choose to join and defend our country.

On the other side of the coin, the military needs to step up to the plate and make a potential military career worth the sacrifice.

That means the pentagon needs to drop the PC social engineering bullshit, and focus on what a military is actually for.

During WWII, they enlisted every available man in the army. Then they discovered half the army was below average n intelligence.

That’s about right. But most of those troops had gone through tough Depression times before they entered the military. Most of the most adept troops were from rural areas. Our Army relied on ingenuity and individual incentive during tough situations. The Germans, for instance, had no such attitude or policies.

Me too. Even though my time frame wasn't too popular with a certain contingent. 🇺🇸

My Son graduated from Army OCS Thursday and was Commissioned as a 2LT in the Military Police. I managed to get back into Blues for the event (they'd shrunk a bit since I retired in ‘97) and was Honored with his Silver Dollar Salute.

The Colonel that gave the commencement address said that 80% of the men and women entering the Military today come from former Military families. A show of hands indicated almost 90% of the families present had someone who had served.

That’s right - and half were above average.

No. Nope. Kids are fatter, softer and dumber. Part of this is due to the increasing diversity of our population, which dramatically lowers intellectual capability, and the dumbing down of schools, in part to accommodate the less intellectually well equipped population.
