DISEASE X Global pandemic of mystery disease could wipe out humanity, top scientists warn

THE World Health Organisation keeps a list of dangerous diseases which pose a serious threat of outbreak.

During a high-level meeting of the best medical scientists in the world, they added another to the high-risk list: The ominously named "Disease X".

I'm posing this because after reading the article and some search across the rest of the news and a Google search on Disease X, some irregularities became apparent:

1. No one had reported where Disease X is being found.

2. No one has reported any human cases.

3. No one has reported any animal cases.

4. No one has reported what the symptoms of Disease X are.

5. There is no evidence whatsoever that Disease X has a pathogen.

And yet we are already being told that we must commit funding toward fighting it.

Bring Out Your Dead

What this means is that we have no way to predict which will be the next huge pandemic that causes millions of deaths.

Pandemics have stricken throughout history. We are complacent if we think that modern medicine can halt a pandemic caused by an entirely unknown organism. It can’t. The fact is that whenever a new disease emerges, it can take months to even identify the disease, and years to research treatments for it. In the case of a pandemic, especially one with high mortality, we will not have that time.

Those science fiction shows where they show scientists working feverishly around the clock for a couple of days to come up with the treatment that will save humanity are fiction. That isn’t how science works.

There are steps to take to try to reduce the spread of the disease, but that’s about it. Imagine a disease with a 40% fatality rate that spreads as easily as measles—where you do not even have to be in the same room at the same time as someone who is sick. It would be devastation.
