Two chairmen of key House investigative committees officially asked the Justice Department on Tuesday to appoint a special counsel to look for potential criminality in the Carter Page surveillance case.
Republican Reps. Bob Goodlatte of Virginia and Trey Gowdy of South Carolina, respectively the chairmen of the judiciary and oversight committees, sent a note making the request to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his deputy, Rod Rosenstein.

Trey Gowdy could have made it more interesting by saying that Congress has evidence of treason by Mueller and his communist FBI gestapo, and we need an investigation by military CID.
I can dream, can’t I?
Yep, I’ll dream with ya. Mueller and his gestapo deserve a serious slap down.
Just remember that a special counsel is worthless if it is headed by another member of the deep state. It has to be headed by someone with no ties to the political elite. Someone with an impeccable reputation for being honest and just.
I agree, tonight Bill Hemmer really pi$$ed me off and I use to really like the old unmarried dude..smh
Bret Baier lost any standing with me a long time ago..I wrote to him often..HE NEVER ANSWERED, maybe because he didn't like my Conservative, Trump supporter questions..
What ever..he should have responded..so bought and paid for like the rest of Cable network hosts at all the networks..
If Sessions refuses this request then President DJT needs to fire him, if not, i will not vote in 2020..let it be what ever it will be..but all government workers have been a great disappointment once they get in office..then it is all about them and MONEY..nothing else..JMO.
I'VE SUPPORTED PRESIENT TRUMP THRU THICK AND THIN..BUT HE WILL LOSE MY SUPPORT IF HE FAILS TO ACT, AND ACT SOON..HE IS BITTERLY LETTING DEMOCRATS CONTROL MUELLER AND THIS STUPID SC. THAT WAS ALL PLANNED BY LIBERALS IN ADVANCE ONCE HILLARY LOST..again JMO.
I’m still waiting for the FBI patriots, who some insist do exist, to expose the FBI traitors on the 7th floor. It’s not difficult: FBI patriots took an oath to defend the constitution and enforce the law. So, where are our FBI heroes?
IMO, I think it’s going to take an order from President Trump to send in the 101st Airborne to clean out that nest of traitorous snakes at the criminal FBI.
AMY WALTERS married KATHRYN HAMM in May 2013
NOW ISN’T THAT SPECIAL...
SMH...QUEER WORLD WE ARE BECOMING...glad I’m Old and my days are numbered..
It will be interesting to see what Sessions does. If he appoints one, you will know more about what is going on. It is possible that the reason Gowdy did this now is that he knows what the IG report says, and it will be apparent that he can not proceed because of the inability to compell anyone to testify. Sessions has no reason to not appoint a narrowly defined Special Prosecutor, so he will not have the excuse of a recusal. If he does not appoint, or turns it over to Lowenstein, then he needs to go.
1. Fire Sessions
2. Immediately terminate the Mueller boondoggle.
3. Appoint special counsel to investigate DOJ/FBI/Hillary and democrats in general
4. Empanel grand jury
5. Indictments
6.trials
7.executions
It’s out of control folks.
I agree. And I thank you for using reason, which is generally lacking here at FR when the topic involves the Jeff Sessions in any way. Childish name-calling and ignorance on the issues is thick here in that regard.
I would not 100% agree that DOJeff has 'no reason' to not appoint another SpecialC. For one, we all hate SC investigations for the obvious reasons to hate them: they take forever and the tend to become political fishing trips.
On the other hand, Gowdy was quite clear that he/Goodlatte are asking for a SC now because, while some folks seem to want corrupt/tyrannical/quick actions out of Sessions to make up for corrupt/tyrannical/quick actions of the prior admin, that is not the correct way to proceed. As Trey pointed out on Fox, parts of what needs to be done would be a conflict of interest for the DOJ - since it involves investigating the DOJ.
That is why we have an IG. However, as Trey points out, this case involves a bunch (he said at least a couple dozen) EX-DOJ employees. The IG has little to none authority over them, can't drag them in to testify, etc. And he pointed out that the Congress is little help in doing such investigations because they are correctly toothless constitutionally - plus, as he said they leak like a sieve. He actually sorta complemented the Mule team for leaking less than Schiff. So that leaves us with the awful-but-sometimes-necessary SC option.
Gowdy also answered the fishing trip question pretty well in saying that the AG could constrain the investigation more than the current seemingly out-of-control SC if the written request for the new one is framed correctly.
Another reason DOJeff might not want to do that tomorrow as many here would like is because, theoretically at least, the current SC could/should/would be doing the same thing. I don't trust the Mule though and I don't think Gowdy does either - and Trey knows more than we do about all these matters.
Sessions is far from the sleepy or swampy critter so many have painted him as being. The exact opposite really, his list of first year (of 8, I hope) accomplishments far exceeds what I expected from him even though I know and love his fantastic resume before Trump picked him. Anybody who thinks he is asleep or is somehow a RINO is simply not well-informed or is just here to make lame attempts at humor. I say lame because humor needs a thread of truth to be truly funny - which is why liberal humor generally falls flat on intelligent ears.
Anyway, thanks for the refreshing detour into reason.
I think the OIG report is about to emerge, and this will be the final nail in the coffin. I just wish it would hurry.
Please list his many accomplishments.
-AGJeff issued a memorandum prohibiting his Dept from "...issuing guidance documents that have the effect of adopting new regulatory requirements or amending the law." Look for references to the AG's Regulatory Reform Task Force to understand how that is one of the processes being used to prevent nonsense like the twisted "disparate impact" BS employed by the Obamanation to create law out of thin air under rules which really only allow the dispensing of advice.
-The prosecution of literally thousands of previously excused if not outright protected MS-13 and other gang members. Both here and in the incubator nations of Central America. Much of it being done to satisfy Trump's EO on "Enforcing Federal Law with Respect to Transnational Criminal Organizations and Preventing International Trafficking".
-Aggressively, rightfully and finally (and probably soon successfully) taking the correct side in the Janus v. AFSCME case. The federal level analogy to what my awesome Gov Walker did here in WI to help financially de-fang the public union enemy while protecting worker freedoms.
-Settled the neglected till (purposely) nearly forgotten cases brought by literally hundreds of TEA party type outfits, stating: "...without question our First Amendment prohibits the federal government from treating taxpayers differently based solely on their viewpoint or ideology. Theres no excuse for this conduct.... this abuse of power will not be tolerated."
-The announced commencement of Civil Rights investigations against colleges/Universities (including the much ballyhooed Haaarvard) which discriminate against Asians and Whites for admissions.
-Taking the side of free speech against the asinine policy of 'safe zones' on campus.
-Putting an end last summer to the HolderBama horrendous practice of funding evil liberal third parties as beneficiaries to unrelated lawsuits. As DOJeff stated: "Nowhere does the Constitution grant unelected attorneys or political appointees the power to effectively appropriate and distribute funds based on their political alliances." -A welcomed return to protecting religious liberty including reversing positions argued in federal court and even the SC including arguing in favor of the bakers as opposed to the prior admin's preference for the candle stick takers. And this was not limited to DOJ-specific dept policy. The AG sent instructions to ALL executive branches ordering them to: "...vigorously enforce Federal laws robust protections for religious freedom." and then proceeded to settle many lawsuits in favor of Catholic/other colleges/hospitals, charities and such.
-Denying new grants to Sanctimonious Cities as well as doing the ground work to define and eventually prosecute the crimes of those in collusion with that city and/or state-level enemy. On this one, SEE TODAY's COURT RULING!
-Another successful DOJ court battle during the past week was the DACA ruling.
-Doing the Lord's work and fulfilling Trump's number one campaign promise by admirably and successfully waging the legal battles in support of travel bans, refuges, walls and such.
-Last fall ending the terribly unconstitutional practice of the terrible prior admin and instead finally doing the DOJ's job in recognizing Congress's sole authority under Art 2, Section 9 to appropriate and dispense funds. Thus ending the cost-sharing reduction payments to health insurance companies which were not part of any law.
-Ending the prior admin's policy of favoring preferred races and imagined genders when deciding who/what should be held accountable under the law.
-Ending or re-evaluating many various "consent decrees" issued by the evil prior admin against local LEO's simply because they arrested folks of color disproportionate to their population numbers despite committing crimes vastly disproportionate to their population numbers. Taking a refreshingly correct fed level position that: "It is not the responsibility of the federal government to manage non-federal law enforcement agencies."
Even successful doing things which I personally don't approve of as a believer in a Free Republic, but which are technically Jeff's job until Congress rights their own dang wrongs in this respect. Meaning a surge in the opioid/etc drug wars, undoing Obama's ban on sharing military type equipment with local LEOs somewhat financed with asset forfeitures and such. Again, these few things I hate but which technically are still part of his job.
Despite the presidential knives in his back, Session is by far the one appointee most responsible for enacting the Trump policies and agenda he ran on - which, of course, Jeff was instrumental in forming during the campaign.
The man who much lesser men demean in an incredibly ignorant fashion as some sort of unqualified and sleepy swamp creature is absolutely nothing of the sort. For God's sake, he was Trump's first and most loyal DC supporter, a long term honest and very conservative Senator from a very conservative state, a highly active and knowledge-driven member of the Senate Judiciary committee, a US Attorney and, yes, even prior experience as an AG! Few if any could be considered a more qualified Attorney General choice.
It is certainly valid to question the decision to recuse and to be naturally impatient with the slow moving and once again rightly more secret wheels of the more political aspects of Justice. But it is embarrassingly wrong of folks to characterize Sessions as being in any way unqualified or unproductive. Quite the opposite is the truth!
Yes, I realize that many purely political-minded folks seem to think Sessions' ONLY job is to constantly pry Trump's foot out of his own dang mouth. But that would be another full time job. Recall who exactly it was saying post-election but pre-inauguration that he WON'T be pursing crimes against "crooked Hillary's" Apple Dumpling Gang because she has suffered enough - yes, TRUMP himself!
The Don's flip on that later flopped back and the hypocritical knives came out against Sessions. Regardless, I and Trump (now) agree those investigations should be done. And are being done to some extend via the current IG, we will know soon how much additional work needs to be done after his report in the coming few weeks.
DOJeff is doing fan-freaking-tastic work for the American people and for the Free Republic in general.
Special Counsels and commissions are retarded entities.
I agree with your assessment. In fact, I half way suspect and hope that this is a plot between Sessions and Gowdy. The reason might be to give Sessions the cover to get back into the investigation. The timing makes me suspect that the IG’s report will be rekeased in the next week or two, and there will be a lot of smoke, but no fire. The conclusion that the IG might suggest is that there is enough evidence to proceed but he does not have enough statutory power to do so. That being the case, Justice would be forced to investigate, but as Gowdy pointed out, they can not investigate themselves. Therefore, Sessions would be forced to appoint an independent or just fold up and admit he has lost control and leave it to Rosenstein. I could be totally wrong, but at least with the request in writing, Justice will be forced to do something. If I am right, it is a beautiful strategy, in my opinion.
Definitely some behind-the-headlines communication is likely going on there.
I also, as a Trump voter but not a Trump sycophant, kinda believe this is all part of his professional wrestling style of phoniness. Meaning I think it is possible The Don is using the most honest guy in DC, Jeff, as very public political cover - while somewhat quietly launching off the top rope to get nearly everything Trump ran on done under the radar.
In the meantime, the bits and bites of news slowly come to light which is turning the public in favor of doing what even the Don flipped to say he would NOT do about 10 seconds after being elected - go after the Hillary cabal.
Like it or not, our president is the most purely political creature ever elected. A true populist who likes to build support before pulling the trigger on political things. It's not always the constitutionally correct or morally right thing (2A, etc) but he is what he is and I can recognize it without always liking it.
Who could logically claim that DOJeff is simply a political hack appointed only to protect a corrupt (in lib eyes, not mine) Trump when Sessions has done literally everything sometimes painfully by-the-book all along - which he has always done throughout his storied career?
Look at what the ruse (if it is one) has accomplished already. Even Ryan and the establishment guys in Congress have warned Trump NOT to fire the very productive AG even though Jeff is doing many things Ryan and the open borders crowd absolutely hate.
The gruesome twosome, Rosenstein and Sessions, gave us Mueller. They could give us someone even worse. This might be a case of “Be careful what you wish for”.
I see no way this ends well for us.
Sweet!
As of tonight (officially tomorrow morning) add this to the long (and not complete) list I already gave you:
DOJeff is now taking CA to court to kill several state laws passed which essentially break federal laws regarding illegal immigration.
Damn, does this AG ever sleep?
If you asked the illegals Trump promised to expel or the sanctimonious liberals, the answer clearly would be: HELL NO!
