The business model for Amazon Alexa is not apps (their own or third party) to spy on you or get in your life. It is to sell you Amazon services. The first thing they will want is your CC so they can sign you up for more and more stuff. Alexa will be unhappy with you unless you pay her $10 a month minimum. Factually untrue. Do you have an Amazon Echo? None of my Echo devices asked me for a credit card and I use them for all kinds of things FOR FREE, no credit card required.
Are there services you can subscribe to? Sure. Need a credit card to use an Echo (Alexa) device after you purchase it? NO. There are literally THOUSANDS of skills available FREE for the Echo device that are quite useful. I use a fair number of them including making phone calls, responding to incoming texts using nothing but my voice and more.
Your post totally misrepresented the device which makes me question whether or not you even have one.

By contrast, Google Home is a pushover. Just say, "Hey Google, play WXKS AM!", and she'll do it. No questions asked, an AM station with FM quality! The same exact command, substituting "Alexa" for "Google" works just fine on all three of my Amazon Alexa's.
Alexa & Google are nothing more than stupid machines that do exactly what you tell them to do as long as they have the capability to do it.

I looked at scan disk, I undersatand that the new ones have difficulty downloading from some of the popular sites?
I think I can have the streaming radio be a different device from the book reader.

Great point. I bought a broken Samsung phone at the pawn shop for $5. It won’t access wireless but will store whatever I download into it. (I guess sync is the correct term?).
If it’s on youtube I can rip it into the device.

I want to listen to books not read them.
I have an Asus transformer if I want to read books on a device, which I don’t particularly like to do, just when traveling.
