Tech Ping: Wanted a Device to Listen to Books and Radio and Music... So went to my local Staples and they sold me something called a fire7 get this...with ALEXA.
All I wanted was a machine that would essentially replace the Sony Walkman that was in my pocket 20 years ago.
What I got was a device that is essentially a pocket computer that tracks and listens to me. for 45 dollars. Which means that it is funded by the apps to get in my life.
I had no idea that ALEXA came with it, and I did not open it and I will be taking it back.
What a horrowshow.
Is there anything out there that is a device I could use to listen to music, download radio aps and listen to books that isn't a walking tracking device and intrusive. I guess I believe in the old idea of distributed processing, different devices for different things.
BTW my phone is steam-powered. And I like it. So no, no fancy phone.
Factually untrue. Do you have an Amazon Echo? None of my Echo devices asked me for a credit card and I use them for all kinds of things FOR FREE, no credit card required.
Are there services you can subscribe to? Sure. Need a credit card to use an Echo (Alexa) device after you purchase it? NO. There are literally THOUSANDS of skills available FREE for the Echo device that are quite useful. I use a fair number of them including making phone calls, responding to incoming texts using nothing but my voice and more.
Your post totally misrepresented the device which makes me question whether or not you even have one.
The same exact command, substituting "Alexa" for "Google" works just fine on all three of my Amazon Alexa's.
Alexa & Google are nothing more than stupid machines that do exactly what you tell them to do as long as they have the capability to do it.

I looked at scan disk, I undersatand that the new ones have difficulty downloading from some of the popular sites?
I think I can have the streaming radio be a different device from the book reader.
Every so often at the flea market I run across one of the old 1” x 3” FM radio receivers with an armband and headphone jack.
Vintage junk.
can you really turn ALEXA off.
I don’t see that happening.
Google and FB have been announcing on FB when clients visit my office.
Great point. I bought a broken Samsung phone at the pawn shop for $5. It won’t access wireless but will store whatever I download into it. (I guess sync is the correct term?).
If it’s on youtube I can rip it into the device.

I am now warning them of this, and advising them to leave their devices in the car.
The device has a gps tracker that tracks where you are and that information is recorded.
Think of her as a needy girlfriend who is kind of cheap, kind of useless, but always needy.

I had no idea that Sony still made a Walkman.
Those were the days, with my yellow Walkman clasped to my arm.
can you take the app off?
why did you take out sim card? What is a slide, do you mean like my LG cosmos3
my 2011phone has location on or 911 location on.
My life is dull. I don’t particularly want to be in their information stream.
what did you do with the ALEXA app?
so if I get an old phone without a sim card. I can use it for books downloads and radio via wifi?
Where do I find the sim card. Is it the little diskette on the side?
I want to listen to books not read them.
I have an Asus transformer if I want to read books on a device, which I don’t particularly like to do, just when traveling.
I am looking at it seriously. Does it restart the book where you left off?
