Georgia lawmakers yank tax break for Delta after airline cuts ties with NRA

Georgia lawmakers voted to nix a tax benefit for Atlanta-based Delta as part of a broader tax package approved Thursday, following the airline's decision to sever ties with the National Rifle Association.

The bill -- which includes a sweeping income tax cut -- cleared the state House on an overwhelming 135-24 vote, after being approved in the state Senate on a 44-10 vote. It now heads to the governor's desk.

The final version dropped an earlier amendment that would have renewed a jet fuel tax exemption worth $50 million that was taken off the books in 2015.

“Businesses have every legal right to make their own decisions, but the Republican majority in our state legislature also has every right to govern guided by our principles,” Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, who very publicly threatened to pull the airline tax break earlier this week, said in a statement.

LT. GOV. CASEY CAGLE REACTS ON 'CAVUTO LIVE,' SATURDAY AT 10 AM ET Republicans threaten to kill tax legislation that benefits companies who cut ties with NRA after Florida mass shooting.

Republican Gov. Nathan Deal, serving his last year in office, said he plans to sign the tax package, though he initially pushed for the airline tax break.

Deal said he would still pursue a jet fuel tax exemption separately.

The rejection of the tax break for now, though, marked a swift rebuke from state lawmakers, who had been weighing the restoration of the benefit until this week. It was originally pitched as an “airline tax break,” rather than one that would only benefit Delta.

We need to quit being concern about what the libtards will do. We should not modify our ethical beliefs based on potential loss of income. Like the Boy scouts did.

As a Delta stock holder, I’m not mad at Georgia. I’m mad at Delta for caving in to a radical mob pushing a political agenda.

Delta management brought this on the company, it is their fault.

Moving to the South with their old time attitudes, beliefs, and culture: it was like going home. You gotta love South Carolina

So true. A company should stay out of politics and take care of business.

When a company makes a political statement, they should expect consequences.

Probably. Or the plains states. If we can get trump in for 7 years and keep the congress revolution can likely be averted. More like little leftist insurections that get squashed. If the dems win in 2020...burning simmer waiting for a spark which will sadly happen.

I think Bezos is about to lose his USPS sweetheart deal. How, remains to be seen.

That will send a clear message. YOU WILL TOW OUR LINE... or we will use the power of the state to punish you.

The other side has long used this tactic. It's about time they got a dose of their own medicine.

Roughly the lower 1/3 of Illinois has cottonmouths, magnolia trees and southern accentts. Guess what they think of Chicago?

A lot of this nation's current problems can be traced back to Chicago.

Last time I flew on Delta, was late getting to Atlanta, taxied out only to return to the terminal because someone in first class broke a headrest, late getting into Seattle, my flight to Hawaii was late to Seattle as well and thus had to spend the night on the terminal floor wrapped in 4 skimpy Delta blankets. Called my hotel in Hawaii and explained the situation. When I got to Hawaii, the hotel had given my room away. Trip from hell.

Connecticut Democratic Gov. Dannel Malloy and New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo both have invited Delta to move its headquarters to their states in the midst of the company’s disagreement with the legislature.

LOL! Like that's going to happen.

I didn’t read all the comments, but all thus far are missing the point.

Someone at Delta made a publicity move on a toxic emotional issue in the wake of Parkland and did so without consulting with other departments responsible for lobbying the tax break.

I would have LOVED to have been the fly on the wall in that boardroom the next day.

My point: Shareholders are the ones who should be pissed and demanding someone’s ass.

Insofar as boycotting Delta, good luck with that if you fly regularly.

Bye Delta. Guess you’d better move your hub to some DimocRAT stronghold like Kookifornia, New Yecccch, or Illinois.

A few more on the list that need attention. We cancelled our Lifelock service yesterday after verifying with their customer service that they were discontinuing NRA discounts.
