Trump’s Sudden Love of Gun Control Isn’t That Sudden
© 2018 National Review ^ | March 1, 2018 10:33 AM | By JIM GERAGHTY

Donald Trump, a Manhattan real-estate mogul who had traveled with his own personal security for years, had never really been a “gun guy.”

In his 2000 book, The America We Deserve, he wrote, “I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I also support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun.”

Even in his remarks accepting the (NRA) endorsement, Trump made comments that suggested he found owning a lot of guns . . . kind of worrisome. “My sons are members,” Trump declared. “They have so many rifles, so many guns, that even I get concerned. I say, ‘That’s a lot!’”

Wednesday we learned that the Trump White House . . . might not be all that different from the Clinton White House on guns after all. During a meeting with Vice President Pence and senior senators . . .

Trump endorsed the Assault Weapons Ban. Trump endorsed background checks for private sales at gun shows. Trump endorsed raising the age to purchase firearms to 21. Trump declared the top priority of the NRA since Trump’s election, concealed-carry reciprocity, “will never pass.” (This bill would ensure that if you have a valid concealed-carry permit in your home state, you are allowed to carry a concealed weapon in any state.) Trump contended members of Congress were “petrified of the NRA” and that he was not. “They have great power over you people. They have less power over me.” Finally, Trump contradicted his own vice president’s assurances about due process and basically contended that the government should seize firearms from people it deems dangerous and go back and get legal justification later.

Okay. That is what he said. But, if CCW reciprocity can’t pass as part of a negotiated bill in which both sides are expected to compromise, when can it pass?

Sorry, Trump, but cops must obey the LAW. As must YOU! NO CONFISCATING OF ARMS! Trump, you CANNOT ban Bumpfire stocks by Executive Order. Everyone will IGNORE it, and you will look FOOLISH.

jyo19: This was an opportunity to embarrass an enemy, Toomey, who refused to endorse him. Nothing more. Trump isn’t stupid (despite sounding like it sometimes) he’ll likely make some statement about due process and the Rubio bill soon.
jim macomber: I have seen this excerpt quoted several times already. I went to the source - looked at the tape. Listened to what he said. He specifically expressed support for the CCW reciprocity and suggested it be brought up in a separate bill stating he thought the overall bill being discussed at the meeting "would never pass" with CCW in it.
ctdonath2: Remember Trump plays rope-a-dope: he offers the opposition everything they want, in a way that they can’t take “yes” for an answer. Having neutralized their own arguments, he wins his thru their self-imposed impotence.
PCPOET7: you should know trump at this meeting skillfully destroyed a piece of gun control legislation that was going to happen... remember when he told Dian Feinstein that by his order he could regulate the bump stock situation....that bill was going to become law whether trump supported it or not now it is just a executive order and he never said what shape the order would happen in...
ctdonath2: the Left doesn't actually care about achieving gun control, they're arbitrary plot devices for rallying votes for Democrats and condemning Republicans... He's offering the Left some massive-sounding concessions where Republicans usually just scream "no!" at Leftists (or relent & betray), so Democrats are giddy over what they're hearing - but not thinking yet about how the consequences will devastate their base. When they do figure out what he's pulling (intentional or not), they'll freak and flee just as they did DACA.
Thanks all.

If you think Toomey is a conservative or a “fellow” anything then you didn’t follow the things he said during the campaign very well.

That is the issue. What is the definition of crazy enough to have their guns taken away? And who gets to make the call?

In the Army it was easy, the commander of the unit could lock down just about anyone until an initial investigation.

So, it was temporary pending results.

I trusted that system. The officers and NCOs I ever worked with were honorable Americans.

In our civilian system, we don’t have the means of making quick checks to determine the real history of any given person. In the army, we were a pretty tight community and if someone was strange, it was there in the unit. And evidence and anecdotes.

The best I can come up with is a judge: then a requirement to check with neighbors, with police, with local records and newspapers, with doctors.

That answer won’t satisfy everyone, but we’d make all this a lot better by hardening our schools and re-instituting insane asylums.

It is not within the power of Congress to grant 50-State CCW reciprocity.

Congress could and should, immediately, mandate recognition of all 49 state CCW permits in the District of Columbia.

I’m an NRA member. He said those congressmen are afraid of the NRA.

I hope so.

In most of red county flyover America, it’s not very wise to talk about taking folks guns away UNLESS we’re dealing with a criminal or crazy.

Please define “crazy”.

Then, please tell us who will decide who is “crazy”.

Finally, please describe the process you think said person/entity should use to determine when someone is “crazy”.

Trump also selects pro 2nd amendment judges like Gorsuch. I don’t know what to make of Trump, maybe he just needs a better understanding of the constitutional and bill of rights before he speaks. And he needs to be more concerned with the millions of gun owners who got him elected and value their opinions too, and less concerned with trying to please the media or other people who have no interest in electing him.
