Donald Trump, a Manhattan real-estate mogul who had traveled with his own personal security for years, had never really been a gun guy.
In his 2000 book, The America We Deserve, he wrote, I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I also support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun.
Even in his remarks accepting the (NRA) endorsement, Trump made comments that suggested he found owning a lot of guns . . . kind of worrisome. My sons are members, Trump declared. They have so many rifles, so many guns, that even I get concerned. I say, Thats a lot!
Wednesday we learned that the Trump White House . . . might not be all that different from the Clinton White House on guns after all. During a meeting with Vice President Pence and senior senators . . .
Trump endorsed the Assault Weapons Ban. Trump endorsed background checks for private sales at gun shows. Trump endorsed raising the age to purchase firearms to 21. Trump declared the top priority of the NRA since Trumps election, concealed-carry reciprocity, will never pass. (This bill would ensure that if you have a valid concealed-carry permit in your home state, you are allowed to carry a concealed weapon in any state.) Trump contended members of Congress were petrified of the NRA and that he was not. They have great power over you people. They have less power over me. Finally, Trump contradicted his own vice presidents assurances about due process and basically contended that the government should seize firearms from people it deems dangerous and go back and get legal justification later.

His sons need to talk some sense into him on this subject
Most “private sales” between individuals are NOT done at gun shows.
I doubt if he’ll keep it up. This was an opportunity to embarrass an enemy, Toomey, who refused to endorse him. Nothing more. Trump isn’t stupid (despite sounding like it sometimes) he’ll likely make some statement about due process and the Rubio bill soon.
What republicans have done to deal with and outsmart the Dems has been what?
When I used to deal with my four year old Id say, to their wacky, unprocessed, enthusiastic, dangerous, energetic, unwise, emotional, on the verge of anger ideas, was, absolutely!! Sounds good! Lets do! Then give them a meal. Theyd eat, get in some TV, sleep, think it through, reconsider and either to save face, forget about it or if they couldnt get out of it, frightened with their power over me, come up with something else. But it was always their idea to do something different.
Easy
I have seen this excerpt quoted several times already. I went to the source - looked at the tape. Listened to what he said. He specifically expressed support for the CCW reciprocity and suggested it be brought up in a separate bill stating he thought the overall bill being discussed at the meeting "would never pass" with CCW in it.
Remember Trump plays rope-a-dope: he offers the opposition everything they want, in a way that they can’t take “yes” for an answer. Having neutralized their own arguments, he wins his thru their self-imposed impotence.
What part of 4D chess involved attacking fellow republicans for being “petrified” by the NRA (thereby attacking the NRA as well)?
you should know trump at this meeting skillfully destroyed a piece of gun control legislation that was going to happen... remember when he told Dian Feinstein that by his order he could regulate the bump stock situation....that bill was going to become law whether trump supported it or not now it is just a executive order and he never said what shape the order would happen in...I can imagine that it could be as simple as that you cant sell a gun that has this modification. but owning it is legal... before with Feinsteins bill it would of been jail time with this modification. also this order lasts until he changes it or some one else gets in office where if Feinsteins bill passed we would be stuck with it
He’s certainly to my left on guns. But there also looks like he’s playing a game with Dems like he did with DACA.
1) He knows Dems can’t/won’t let him “win” on anything
2) A bipartisan gun control bill would be a “win” for the dealmaker president the way he has set things up (listening sessions, meetings, publicly saying “no” to republicans, etc)
3) He makes statements on gun control that make anti-2nd liberals excited and expecting to finally get something done
4) A bill comes up that the Dems can’t accept (point 2) but must accept (point 3). “Trump Hate” is still their top priority so they turn it down.
5) Nothing happens. He offered what a lot of liberals want and got enough republicans on board so Dems look bad while he looks reasonable. As with DACA, nothing gets done and it’s hard to blame Trump or republicans.
Yep. He said it should not be in this bill. However, he encouraged DiFi to put her additions in. Wonder what she will contribute?
If he is trying to outflank the Dems and make them look bad then he has picked a bizarre way to do it. His comments about the NRA, bump stocks, raising the age, and due process are insane. Utterly unhinged.
I fear he is the gun control advocate that I warned of during the election. I hoped against it and he said many, many words to placate people, but it appears, for all practical purposes, that he is pro gun control.
I hope like hell he proves me wrong.
Mitch will never let it come to a vote as a stand alone bill. I doubt it would pass in any case.
Actually, what I think he said was that Cruz should have had his guns taken away and worry about the legalities afterwards.
Crazies. Criminals. He was talking about them.
I think any bill that says that someone who is sent to an alternative school or removed from a school for behavior, as Cruz was, should lose their 2A rights until at least their 21st birthday will have broad, bipartisan support.
I want to know who, exactly, gets to decide who and what, is “crazy”.
For the Left, all the demands for background checks, training, waiting periods, mental-illness limitations, etc are all McGuffins: the Left doesn't actually care about achieving gun control, they're arbitrary plot devices for rallying votes for Democrats and condemning Republicans. I don't think they view such demands as anything but insurmountable obstacles - if passed into law, the more anyone actually complies with the law the more the Left considers it presumptive proof the compliant citizen (actually satisfying those demands) is crazy and should be disarmed.
Trump is calling their bluff. Yes, he's more a centrist on the subject: totally opposed to outright bans, but does see room for limiting criminals/crazies from abusing opportunities. He's offering the Left some massive-sounding concessions where Republicans usually just scream "no!" at Leftists (or relent & betray), so Democrats are giddy over what they're hearing - but not thinking yet about how the consequences will devastate their base. When they do figure out what he's pulling (intentional or not), they'll freak and flee just as they did DACA.
“Crazies. Criminals. He was talking about them.”
Are still entitled to due process.
As a cop told Chris Plante this morning, the police already have discretion to take guns in situations of immediate danger to persons. Beyond that there is due process for less immediate threats. The laws are there and the cop who called in could not think of any news that he would need.
True, but with specific threats the cops can take immediate action.
Coming from National Review, this would be their usual approach on their attempts at siphoning off Trump’s base.
Not happening, Jimbo.
