President Donald Trump embraced Sen. Joe Manchins (D-WV) gun control bill but rejected Rep. Steve Scalises (R-LA) push for national reciprocity during a bipartisan meeting with lawmakers Wednesday afternoon. After listening to Sen Chris Murphy (D-CT), Trump looked at toward the end of the table and asked Sens. Pat Toomey (R-PA) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) to detail their gun control bill.
The Manchin/Toomey gun control bill is the same universal background check legislation supported by Barack Obama in the wake of the heinous attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School. It the very bill that was defeated in the Democrat-controlled Senate on April 17, 2013.
Toomey described it for Trump, saying the bill strengthens the reporting of information into the background check system and requires background checks on all commercial sales. This is code-talk for requiring background checks on private gun sales, which Toomey described as sales at gun shows and online (even though online sales already require a background check).
Manchin then spoke and suggested that West Virginians will support the Manchin/Toomey gun control bill if Trump will support it. He did not mention that the Manchin/Toomey bill would not have prevented the Florida attack just as it would not have prevented the Sandy Hook attack that spawned it.
Trump spoke of the using the Manchin/Toomey bill as a base to which other gun bills can be added, and then continued taking comments from various senators and representatives in attendance.
When it was Rep. Scalises time to speak, he highlighted the crime-fighting value of concealed carriers and the need to pass national reciprocity legislation.

First off, the phrase is really shorthand for making every transfer of a firearm subject to a background check, including private sales or transfers. The only way to enforce such a universal background check realistically is to create a database of who owns guns -- how else could you know if someone transferred a weapon without doing the background check? And that is a huge infringement on the rights of Americans.
It appears that under the Manchin style "strong" background check you could not lend a rifle to your neighbor so he or she could protect their livestock, or just shoot at tin cans.
No other fundamental right has a background check requirement. Would you think it is OK if you had to notify the government and fill out a detailed form before you could attend a new church, synagogue, or mosque? Or seek approval before submitting a letter to the editor?
What are appropriate limits for a "background" check? Again, apply the same tests to choosing a church, or being allowed to speak in public, or post here on Free Republic. What is the determination of who is "qualified"? Somebody who voted for the current President? From the point of view of some people, what about people in poor neighborhoods, or people of color?
The right to keep and bear arms has the same basis as the right to free speech, or the right to practice the religion of your choosing.
Not only NO but HELL NO!!!
I really hope you are wrong. Most of us respect our civil rights.
I don’t know if he will back off or go forward. But if we have to give up something giving up bump stock would have a lot of emotional punch to the uninformed. (Maybe??)
Bottom line. At least we have a better chance of our Republic surviving with Trump then PIAPS.
Are you gonna get off your butt and fight for our Republic by getting involved? Let us know.
I choose to believe he is playing them like a fiddle
The bill is called Fix NICS. It is supported by the NRA, and Trump. All else is bullshit, by hysterical morons and never-trumpers.
This place has become infested with screaming little girls, spouting “Betrayal!” when they don’t know anything. Yet shout from the rooftops.
You don’t know what you are talking about. Maroon.
Fix-NICS exempts background checks for guns sold between private individuals and families. Fix-NICS is supported by the NRA.
The bullshit on this thread is astonishing. Bunch of screaming little girls with their hair on fire.
Think DACA...
Like....
Lost the election? To whom? You voting for Bernie?
?
Yes, he does.
You are right! If Trump won’t stand firm on that, what else will he betray us on? Now the Supreme Court has removed DACA from the agenda, and he has no leverage for the border wall.
How is DACA dead on March 5, if the federal court says it must be continued, and the Supreme Court will not yet intervene?
“What is the argument against strong background checks?”
What is the difference between the terms strong background checks, common sense background checks, moderate background checks, and enhanced background checks?
I don’t know so I’m asking.
Since I don’t know what constitutes a “commercial sale” I’ll ask: What is the commercial gun sale referenced?
What is the argument against strong background checks?

According to Mnachin’s bill if you sell your gun to your sister you would have to do a background check on her.
“Trump spoke of the using the Manchin/Toomey bill as a base to which other gun bills can be added,...”
” Trump added, We want to get something done.”
The words “We want to get something done” are VERY SCARY to me.
If Trump goes down the gun control path ... I and many others will be DONE with this Asshole.
I vote based on one issue only ... the protection of the 2nd Amendment. All other issues pale in comparison because the 2nd is a Bellwether issue.
If you believe in it and fight for it, all other issues the person believes in will fall in line with Constitutional Government.
If not, you are a tyrant want-a-be.
I miss Calvin and Hobbes.
Yeah I think so too.
Thank you!
Yep... trump does not play chess. He goes with the flow to be likeable. Then his staff reals him back in.
