President Donald Trump criticized police for not doing more to prevent a mass shooting at a Florida high school, arguing they should have taken the shooters guns away whether they had the right or not.
During a bipartisan meeting with lawmakers on gun control Thursday, Trump suggested guns should be taken away immediately from people that you can judge easily are mentally ill, alluding to the Florida shooter, who had undergone a psychiatric evaluation in 2016 but was ultimately not hospitalized.
The police saw that he was a problem, they didnt take any guns away, Trump said. Now that could have been policing, but they should have taken them away anyway, whether they had the right or not.
He doubled down on the claim later in the meeting after Vice President Mike Pence spoke about due process and giving local law enforcement more leeway to obtain a court order to collect firearms from potentially dangerous people.
Mike, take the firearms first and then go to court, because thats another system, Trump said. A lot of times, by the time you go to court, it takes so long to go to court, to get the due process procedures. I like taking the guns early.

And stop with the, “The nation” BS. I’m talking about this specific horrific case where everyone down there sat on their asses and did nothing.
Don’t be butt hurt. You support Cruz’s gun rights. I get it.
Yukyuk☺
I’m not butthurt by your sophomoric virtue signalling Progressive straw man BS.
That's right, because in this specific case, that's exactly what should have happened as they had multiple reasons to do so. Would you like me to list all the red flags, warning and threats?
I have no problem doing that for ya. Let me know.☺
At least in Nevada police can put someone on an involuntary 72 hour hold I think, if they deem them a danger to themselves or others. His guns should have then been confiscated. It seems that once during the 39 or 44 times they were called, they should have considered that.
I’d have to call my son to find out the exact statute but my guess is all states have that availability.
Police just don’t like to deal with it. Obviously the police in Florida didn’t want to.
You're contradicting yourself. They had multiple legal reasons to do so. You're defending Trump's statement that suggests they should have acted illegally. That statement is the subject of the thread not the specifics of the Parkland shooting.
You argue like a Progressive, can't stay on topic, can't stay consistent, rant and rave like a little kid yet want people to take you seriously. LOL Fat chance!
Nikolas Cruz was making threats. Repeatedly. Online and off.
This is one of those "taking Trump literally vs. figuratively" moments. The fact is, there was due process for taking Cruz's guns based on his actions. This is why the President is misspeaking.
The President doesn't seem to realize that there was due process in place—the real problem is that Democrats ignored it—at the cost of public safety—because they're more interested in federal funds and eliminating the "school to prison pipeline".
The blood is truly on the hands of the Democrats in Broward county—both the school board and the police—and they should all lose their jobs because of their criminal negligence...
You don't. I have no problem with my position.☺
You lie. I just did say they should have taken his guns.
But you always lie so no surprise there either.
Yes, legally. Not illegally as Trump suggested. The topic of this thread.
Try to focus ... for once.
Is that a confession of your strategy? It's what you've been doing in every post on this thread.
They had the legal right to take them. There was dozens of red flags, warning, and threats. The problem is, no one down there did anything. They sat on their asses.
You’re getting real person here. Ya sure ya want to continue?
I said that.
There was dozens of red flags, warning, and threats. The problem is, no one down there did anything. They sat on their asses.
You're evading again. That's not the topic of this thread.
It's your tagline. You disingenuously use it on others all the time then proceed to deceive and evade like you're doing here.
The police should have left that nutcase’s guns alone. They should have arrested him and held him for psychological evaluation. However, they have no authority to take personal property without due process, and certainly not firearms that are given special legal protection because they are key to a fundamental God-given right. This is about leftist hatred for firearms, not about safety . . . or are they going to take his knives, his SUV, his cleaning products from under the kitchen sink, etc.?
Taking firearms without the burden of due process makes it too easy to weaponize this sort of action. Taking firearms is cheap and popular with those who hate freedom. Holding someone for psychological evaluation is much more expensive, and that cost will prevent widespread abuse of the tactic.
Put a sock in it, Donald!!! You sound like Nancy Pelosi. Or Hillary. Or 0bama.
We did NOT elect you to start advocating a police state.
