What happens when homeless people are sent to motels?

What happens when homeless people are sent to motels? Some are welcomed, some treated warily, some kicked out

Erik Teasley was happy to leave behind the ragtag encampments at the Santa Ana River Trail where he and hundreds of other homeless people had lived until last week, when the county resumed its mass dispersal of an entrenched tent-city community.

A comfortable motel sounded good to Teasley, 47. A homeless man from Santa Ana, he’d spent two years sleeping in different spots on the banks of the flood-control channel. But, last week, when he initially was moved away from the riverbed, he stood in shock when he opened the door to his room at Baymont Inn & Suites in Anaheim.

The room had been stripped bare — no phone, no TV, no clock or radio, no mini refrigerator, no coffee maker. Even the shower curtain was gone.

-snip-

What Teasley and the Kastens didn’t know: In a six-month, $1.68 million contract to rent 99 rooms, the county and Baymont agreed to the removal of the room amenities, along with draining the pool and Jacuzzi, and barring access to the pool area and the on-site gym unless the county requests otherwise.

A copy of the Feb. 20 contract was obtained by the Southern California News Group.

The contract also calls for the county to pay an additional $300 per month per pet for the homeless occupants who brought their cats and dogs, and provides a suite for the county to use as an office where workers will track the progress of homeless people getting services to help with mental health care and long-term shelter.

A follow up from yesterday's post.

Also in the article, it is noted that Legal Aid Society of Orange County is involved, a court filing has been made regarding the indignity of the stripped rooms, and the safety risk of the lack of a telephone in the room

I’ll be surprised if these rooms are not completely trashed and/or burned down within a month.

So now, I guess, it’s no longer safe for normal people to use motels.

...and people wonder why I do most of my travel abroad these days.

Throwing a flat-screen TV out of the window, just isn't the same thing, is it?

In other words they are going to be forced into a bedroom EXACTLY like the one in which I grew up.

Tough.

The homeless population in SoCal is astounding, you literally need to see it to believe it, and it is worse than that.

I wonder how some of these people ended up here, they aren’t all crazy

You still get what you pay for in this world.

I suppose living in an empty room is less dignified than sleeping along the banks of a flood control channel, though I'd be hard-pressed to describe how.

WRT no telephone in the room what did these folks use to communicate to emergency services when they were living along the bank of the flood control channel. I'm very sure the county government did not set up telephone service for them along the banks of the flood control channel.

It's not enough for some folks that the county got these people off the streets. Now, everyone wants these people to live like kings -- all at taxpayer expense.

The contract works out to more than $94/night, so they can surely provide shower curtains and phones...

What I think again and again when I read articles like this:

-why did they get rid of alms/poorhouses? workhouses?

-why did they get rid of mental institutions (sanitoria, etc)?

This article didn’t fail to bring up that specter for me again.

I was planning on buying an RV in about 3 years and touring the country and Canada. I suppose the No-Go zones are increasing exponentially in size. I may need to change my course of action.

“I suppose living in an empty room is less dignified than sleeping along the banks of a flood control channel,”

Oh indeed, liberals are great at spoiled-rotten irony.

Trust me, it’s true: they’d rather vagrants go dumpster-diving than (God forbid) someone cook meals for them and hand them out of their UNLICENSED and UNINSPECTED kitchen. The kitchen might be dirty, you know.

Not to worry....... they have Obama phones

The Leftist guilt runs very deep. The desire to create equality from inequality is stupifying

California must be purged and then split into the decent folk that can then return to the Union

You have a warm dry comfortable place to sleep and running water for free.

And you are complaining?
