As students at the Florida school where 17 people were recently killed returned to classes, a major gun retailer has announced it will stop selling the kind of weapon used in the attack.
Dick's Sporting Goods, which has more than 600 shops, said it would no longer sell assault-style rifles, and backed "common sense gun reform".
The move came as pupils and teachers made an emotional return to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Grief counsellors were on hand.
In the aftermath of the 14 February shooting, pressure has mounted on US politicians to act on gun control and for corporations to cut ties with the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA).
Firms including Hertz car rental, United airlines and Delta airlines have ended discounts to NRA members.
Dick's Sporting Goods announcement also came as Florida lawmakers proposed a package of gun control measures, including a controversial bill to arm school staff, including teachers.
"We have tremendous respect and admiration for the students organising and making their voices heard regarding gun violence in schools and elsewhere in our country," Dick's Sporting Goods said in a statement. "We have heard you. The nation has heard you."
The retailer said it was committing itself to:
No longer selling assault-style rifles (The company had stopped selling such weapons after the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting but 35 shops run by a subsidiary had continued to do so.) Banning the sale of high-capacity magazines that allow more shots to be fired without reloading Not selling firearms to anyone under the age of 21
It said that while it supported the Second Amendment to the US Constitution, which protects the right to keep and bear arms, "gun violence is an epidemic that's taking the lives of too many people".

Its called Field and Stream. I heard they sold magazines.
I have already voiced my displeasure with them.
Didnt they do that like 4 years ago?
In this world you just need to make the announcement, no follow through necessary - just words.
You are right because there is a sporting goods company out there that won’t give a *** about these little cry babies and will make a fortune.
Never went to one, and surely won't now.
Dick’s did this a few years ago. I didn’t know they went back to selling them.
The first one opened not too far from me in 2013 and as of last Chrismas season, they were selling AR-15 style rifles. I just checked online, and all AR-15 style rifles are missing from their website.
After Sandy Hook in 2012, Dick's did a lot of virtue signaling by removing AR-15s from their stores, but they appeared in their Field & Stream store less than a year later. They are big phonies.
It may not be a big deal for Dick's now to remove AR-15s from their stores because knowledgeable hunters/sportsmen/enthusiasts weren't buying them there anyway because of what Dick's had done in 2012.
Bass Pro and Cabela’s still sell all types of guns...good...
No idea what an ‘assault style’ anything is, much less a rifle.
Based on some overheard conversation at a gun store this morning, the only thing holding that stock back from being back on another gun rack is shipping time. Ill choose days, not weeks.
Thought the shooter purchased from an independent store that has been closed by the distraught owner. Only saw that info once so would love to hear/read more from a knowledgeable FReeper. Perhaps a link???
But Dick will continue to sell other guns? What courage. If so, he’ll get a pass by the media and the mush head students.
They won’t even sell them to the new Patrol Teachers?
"Walmart, the largest seller of guns in the US, stopped selling high-powered rifles in its shops in 2015, citing low demand."
For the umpteenth time, the AR-15 is not the only "high powered" rifle in the world. To this day, my Walmart sells all kinds of rifles, including those chambered in .270, 30-30, 308, and .338.
If I can’t buy it at Academy Sports & Outdoors, or Primary Arms, both within 30 minute drive from my home, I won’t bother.
“We support the second amendment” means we only support our interpretation of the second amendment.
Field and Stream is owned by Dick’s. I grew up with Eddie...His Sister ran for Congress against Claudia Tenney and lost...
Dick’s sucks.
There’s nothing they sell that I can’t buy for less money elsewhere, so I don’t shop there.
I suppose that means I’ve been boycotting them ever since they opened a store in the town where I live. I’m a trend-setter! lol
Thanks!
Would live to see Cabela’s, Big 5 or ????? buy every AR15 from the Dicks and sell all of them before March is over.
