The final leg of Interstate 69 from Martinsville to Indianapolis will cost nearly $1.6 billion.
Thats according to the Final Environmental Impact Statement for I-69 Section 6 the state released Thursday. The analysis says construction could start in 2020 and wrap up within six years.
Section 6 will run along the existing route of State Road 37. That means some of the many businesses that line the highway in Morgan, Johnson and Marion counties will have to move.
The FEIS says more than 80 businesses, including a non-profit and fire station, will need to relocate. Thats in addition to nearly 200 residences that will have to move.
INDOT Public Relations Manager Andy Dietrick says many of the people who will be impacted shouldnt be surprised.
“I think from the folks who are going to be impacted their point of view, I think this gives a sense of finality finally,” Dietrick says.
Dietrick says the state can now start making offers on the impacted properties.
Once the interstate is complete, INDOT says the drive from Martinsville to Indianapolis will be about 11 minutes faster.
Funding for the project will come from a variety of sources.
“Theres funding for the project in Governor Holcombs Next Level plan, especially for the southern portion,” Dietrick says. “Not enough to pay for the pre-construction activities as we head north. But, this is programmed in our 20-year mobility plan and the state is ready to build this.”
Construction will start in Martinsville and move north as the project progresses.
The complete FEIS is available online here.
What’s that, about $60 million per mile?
Our government has created quite the system to enrich bureaucrats and unions at great cost over a long time.
I’ve never understood why they don’t just replace 37 with the Interstate instead of routing alongside. Yes they’d still need to have an access road, but I think it would be much less costly.
They are replacing and upgrading State Road 37 with I-69 SIU 3, Section 6 from a new interchange with I-465 down to Martinsville.

At one time Indiana was lobbying to change the number designation, feeling that I-69 was soft porn.
Indiana is a Right to Work state.
Yea, but we are getting Sunday alcohol sales starting this week!
